TUTS Underground Presents *Frank Wildhorn’s “Bonnie & Clyde”

BY // 10.02.15

Houston has enjoyed a long relationship with composer Frank Wildhorn, who’s premiered multiple musicals at the Alley Theatre (Jekyll & Hyde, The Civil War, Svengali, Wonderland). Now he brings subject matter with Texas roots to Zilkha Hall at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, care of TUTS Underground: Bonnie & Clyde, the Broadway musical about the rise and fall of the famous outlaws. (How’s this for a local angle? In Old Town Spring, bullet holes in the wall of The Steel Horse boutique — formerly home of a historic bank — are rumored to be the result of a shootout with the pair. Whether or not that’s true, it’s possible, and adds much to the mystique of the popular shopping district.)

The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2011 and resulted in an original cast album, features music by Wildhorn (whose other shows include The Scarlet Pimpernel and Dracula), lyrics by Don Black (Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard) and book by Ivan Menchell (The Cemetery Club). The TUTS Underground production stars Robert Hager (whose credits include Broadway’s Doctor Zhivago, Spring Awakening, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Bye Bye Birdie) as Clyde Barrow and Kathryn Porterfield (TUTS’ First Date, The Music Man, James and the Giant Peach) as Bonnie Parker. Rounding out the cast are Curt Denham as Henry Barrow/Sheriff Smoot Schid; Ella duCharme as Young Bonnie and Scott Fonseka as Young Clyde (both, students at Theatre Under The Stars’ Humphreys School of Musical Theatre); Adam Gibbs as Ted Minton/Minister; Susan Koozin as Emma Parker; Courtney Markowitz as Blanche Barrow; Susan Schofner as Cumie Barrow; Drew Starlin as Buck Barrow; and Brooke Wilson as Eleanore/Governor Miriam Ferguson.

Lock down your tickets soon, as the production only runs Thursdays through Sundays, with the final performance on Sunday, October 11.
