Seven Feet Tall Stone Wonders Take Over the Arboretum: World Famous Works Make a Rare U.S. Appearance

BY Samantha Klaassen // 02.13.17

As we eagerly await what is sure to be an excitedly art-filled April, we add a cool exhibit at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden to our list. Beginning Saturday, April 15, the garden will host ZimSculpt, a world-famous display of more than 100 modern sculptures from contemporary Zimbabwean artists.

It’s the first time the exhibition will be shown in the southern United States. This is a beautiful collection of works carved from serpentine and semi-precious stone — known as Shona sculpture — that typically weigh tons and stretch as high as seven feet tall. Zimbabwe means “house of stone,” and stone carving has played an important role in the country’s history.

While viewing the exhibit, you can also learn from Zimbabwean artists and sculptors Passmore Mupindiko and Aron Kapembeza, who will be in the garden every day demonstrating how to use chisels, hammers, files, and sandpaper to create these impressive works.

ZimSculpt is on view at the Dallas Arborteum from Saturday, April 15 through Monday, July 31.

Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, 8525 Garland Road, 214.515.6500.
