The Best $13 Concert Ticket You’ll Ever Buy: The Weekend Guru Shines a Light on Music Bargains that are About to Hit it Big

BY // 06.23.17

Houston’s weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Weekend Guru Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this weekly series.

Out of Africa
The Houston Museum of African American Culture, or HMAAC, is a unique jewel hiding in plain sight in the Museum District. This Friday, June 23, from 7 til 10 pm, HMAAC and the Nigerian-American Multicultural Council presents “Africa on My Mind,” a show spotlighting African and African-inspired fashion houses through a fashion show and exclusive shopping experience.

Designers and vendors TBA. For tickets, click here.

We Are the Gatekeepers
Toronto-based singer Jessie Reyez possesses an other-worldly, helium-infused voice — think of the disembodied, ethereal vocals of the supremely talented Nao crossed with SZA and you’re halfway there. She’s due to appear on Calvin Harris‘s sure-to-be-huge summer album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 (“Slide” with Frank Ocean is a top-five song of the year) with no full-length album to her name and little radio play — yet the shows on her first nationwide tour are selling out.

She’ll hit the Bronze Peacock Room at the House of Blues Friday, with doors opening at 7 pm and tickets just $13. Check out her powerful anti-industry sexism short film, Gatekeeper, here.

Steak Night
Texas Monthly‘s first ever Meat Up convenes Saturday at Silver Street Studios – the feast coincides with the magazine’s 50 Best Barbecue Joints in Texas  rankings (which only come out every four years). Chefs from the region will descend into Houston for a one-of-a-kind gastronomical experience, with tickets costing $85 and the meat-fest running from 6 to 9 pm. The Jackson Hive
De’Wayne Jackson is an interesting dude – hailing from Spring (not exactly known for its hip-hop history), he doesn’t really sound like a traditional Houston rapper (think more Chance the Rapper, Saba, even J. Cole). His nasally cracked voice leaps out of the speakers and, having recently decamped to LA, he’s begun picking up some national love.

One of my favorite local producers, DJs, and general all-around good guys, Donnie Houston, opens for Jackson Tuesday at Warehouse Live, with doors opening at 8 pm. Tickets start at $10.
