A Honda Civic Driver Test Drives Lamborghini’s Newest Supercar: When Vroom Vroom Takes You to Another World

Sitting low in the driver’s seat of a brand-new Lamborghini Aventador S, I expected to feel pretty damn cool. And I did, until I couldn’t get it out of park.

The legendary Italian car company let me test drive – or, as they so elegantly put it, pilot – their newest supercar on Monday. The Aventador S is a new-and-improved version of the Aventador, with an upgraded V-12 engine and 740 horsepower. It goes from zero to 60 MPH in 2.9 seconds. It has an impressive maximum speed of 217 MPH.

Not that I would know from experience. I did, in fact, get it out of park, after an embarrassing minute of fiddling with buttons and holding up a line of Lambos behind me. The instructor, a professional race car driver, had to tell me the engine wasn’t on. He pushed a button and it purred to life.

“You should be good to go,” he said, not without a hint of judgement.

In my defense, I was one of only two drivers that day who had not driven a Lamborghini before. My 2009 Honda Civic is a different animal entirely.

Not to mention, the Aventador S has a starting price of $424,845. Add some bells and whistles and you’ll spend close to half a million.

The Aventador S just looks a world away from your average car. Lamborghini redesigned it to better reflect nature. I don’t know how ‘natural’ it really looks, but it looks good. It has that ultra-sleek, fierce look that Lamborghini is loved for, but it’s a little more modern and trim than previous models.

Unsurprisingly, it was a joy to drive once I finally got it on the track. The car has a seven-speed automatic gear box and four drive modes. Strada and Sport are completely automatic, while Corsa and Ego modes require use of paddle shifters. I used Sport because the instructor told me it was loud (the Aventador sounds as good as it looks).

I’m not going to lie, I drove faster on the way to MotorSport Ranch than I did on the track. Nevertheless, it was fun and I did feel cool, even after my pitiful start. The car steers like a dream and can break to a halt with the shortest of notice.

In the words of Ferris Bueller, “If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.”
