A Magical Show With Powerful Women Who Soar Hits Dallas: Amaluna Defies Gravity, Brings Cirque du Soleil to New Heights

A circus is always a spectacle — but that doesn’t mean it’s spectacular. Many rely on animals and cheap tricks. But there’s one beyond unique circus out there that defies gravity and even the wildest expectations, thriving on flights of the fanciful.

That would be Cirque du Soleil, the largest theatrical producer in the world.  You can experience one of Cirque’s most breathtaking productions when Amaluna opens at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie January 23, 2019.

The transformative Cirque du Soleil was all created by two daring street performers back in 1984. Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix’s bold brainchild is now a contemporary circus, driven by engrossing narratives, amazing acrobatics and carefully crafted characters in the place of trained animals.

Each and every show boasts a central theme and unique storyline, influenced by circuses from the world over. The shows are an incredible synthesis and are even accompanied by live music. Each and every act takes discipline, skill and imagination.

Cirque du Soleil’s new show, Amaluna, hits all these marks — and then some. Amaluna weaves an entrancing tale of femininity, rebalance, renewal and rebirth. Cirque du Soleil is embracing that femininity with a mother-daughter relationship at the core of the production — and, for the first time ever, with a band made up of exclusively women.

Much of the cast is women too, making this a show very much of the times while still telling a timeless story.

“I didn’t want to build a ‘women’s agenda’ show,” Tony Award-winning Amaluna director Diane Paulus says in a statement. “I wanted to create a show with women at the center of it, something that had a hidden story that featured women as the heroines.”

Forty-eight artists embody the themes, taking on extraordinary feats like aerial artistry, Chinese pole balancing and teeterboard twisting and turning.

The show ushers you into a mysterious, dazzling island governed by a goddess, revolving around the cycles of the moon. Queen Prospera prepares for her beloved daughter Miranda’s coming-of-age ceremony and for passing her values and insights down to the young heroine.

Paulus was inspired by Norse and Greek mythology, Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Shakespeare’s transcendent The Tempest. That last homage comes across in a sweeping storm brought on by Prospera, stranding a group of young men on the island.

Miranda falls hard for a brave young suitor, but their love is soon put to the test — in a series of eye-popping, jaw-dropping challenges, tantalizing trials and spirited setbacks.

A Stage of Wonder

The riveting acts range from artists flying in aerial straps, moving nimbly through full 360 degree moves in the air at high velocity, suspended from a rotating carousel to an entrancing peacock dance in the enchanted forest and a classic gymnastic act with a twist — a rapid-pace version of the uneven bars.

This is a spectacle that kids, grandparents and everyone in-between, will enjoy. It’s not just another night out. It’s a magical night.

It’s all set to the all-female band’s raw, high-energy music. They often share the stage with the performers, weaving together the sonic rhythm and visual rhythms. The composers unleash raw power through percussion, bass, drums, vocals and keyboards in support of the guitar.

The fabulous, multidimensional costumes tell their own story in a palette of colors, eras and places. The symbiotic relationship between costume and character is at the forefront of the attire, inspired by the Orient, Scandinavia and England.

The remarkable, one-of-a-kind set ties everything together. It’s easy to get lost in the wonder of this story. The immersive enchanted forest is spacious, framed and surrounded by an elaborate collection of bamboo branches.
