The Best Things to Do in Dallas This Month: It’s One Solar August

BY Merrit Stahle // 08.09.17

August might typically be known as a slow month, but Dallas is proving otherwise. There’s no excuse for boredom as you finish out the summer with one (or more) of the activities we’ve discovered below.

Dallas will not afford a perfect view of the solar eclipse that is coming on Monday, August 21, but there are still places where you can enjoy the rare event. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden is hosting a solar eclipse party from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Camp Lawn, overlooking White Rock Lake. The afternoon will also include hot dogs, Kona Ice, and oversized lawn games.

Additionally, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science is throwing a free solar eclipse celebration from noon to 2 pm, with activities on the plaza. Space-themed costumes encouraged!

August is also perfect for foodies — it’s National Sandwich Month. Head to upscale Uptown bar and grill Moxie’s, which is celebrating with its sweet and savory Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich topped with cabbage slaw, cheddar cheese, and pickles.

If you’re craving seafood, stop by Lovers Seafood and Market throughout the month of August for an all-you-can-eat catfish buffet ($18). It also includes French fries, hush puppies, and your choice of regular or spicy tartar sauce.

Mark your calendar for a few fun Saturday morning events at Sid Washburn boutique (3319 Knox St.). During August, the men’s shop in Knox-Henderson will open early for coffee, donuts, and lessons on how to make sartorial life a little bit easier.
