Heart-Wrenching Scenes From the Dallas Storms — a Look at the Destruction and a Beyond Eerie Aftermath

City Comes Together for an Epic Cleanup Amid Great Loss

About 20 minutes after the horrific Dallas storm passed Sunday night, I hopped in my car to go to the grocery store. I had witnessed the rain and wind blasting past at 70mph through my apartment windows, but I could never have guessed the damage that it had left in its wake.

As I was driving to Trader Joe’s in the Knox-Henderson area, the streets felt eerie. Traffic lights were completely out and trees were split in half and falling over into the streets. There was random debris like patio furniture cushions tossed about in yards.

Later that night around 9 pm, I tried finding a restaurant in the Uptown area to go pick up food at and most places were closed due to power outages. As I turned the corner from Hall Street onto McKinney Avenue, in the parking lot right in front of Quarter Bar, I saw police cars surrounding a billboard that had fallen on top of a car.

Even Monday morning, there was a strange feeling around the city. Power is still out in many areas. Almost 220,000 people were without power in Dallas County and there continues to be about 205,000 people still dealing with outages. Many might not even get their power back until Thursday evening.

Traffic lights are still blinking red or completely out. There’s a Purge-esque feeling that isn’t so comforting.

By now, most of us have heard about the crane that crashed into the Elan City Lights apartment building in Deep Ellum and tragically killed 29-year-old Kiersten Symone Smith. Others were injured and are still in critical care.

Amongst the tragedy of death and damage, Dallas is coming together to clear debris, restore power, and hopefully bring a sense of security back to the city after this unexpectedly devastating event. We’ve compiled some photos of the damage that’s going to take some time to clean up and get Dallas back up and running.
