Drake’s Singing Rapper Buddy, The Panhandle Rambler and a Symphony Sprint: Your Houston Concert Guide

BY // 03.04.16

Houston’s concert scene brings plenty of action, but we want to make sure you know about the under-the-radar shows as well as the monster acts. PaperCity’s Matthew Ramirez cuts through the noise to find the best things musical events around town. Without further ado, this week’s top picks.

3 WEEKS OF BEETHOVEN FRIDAY, MARCH 4–SUNDAY, MARCH 6 @ JONES HALL
A three-season cycle that will see the Symphony tackle all nine of Beethoven‘s symphonies over three years, this season’s sprint begins this weekend with symphonies 2 and 8. (Next weekend, starting March 11, will see a reprise of 2 and a production of Beethoven’s 3rd. March 18 sees the great 9th, featuring “Ode to Joy.”)

JOE ELY, FRIDAY, MARCH 4 @McGONIGEL’S MUCKY DUCK
Described as the “Panhandle Rambler” on his new record, Ely is an institution, working against a west Texas backdrop that inspired the likes of country and country/rock/folk legends like Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Tanya Tucker, Guy Clark, and Ely’s long-time musical partners Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Ely hits the Duck touring behind his well-received 2015 record Panhandle Rambler.

FETTY WAP, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9 @ HOUSE OF BLUES
No one had the 2015 Fetty Wap had, landing four Top 10 singles and an enduring, cross-generational smash with his delirious love song “Trap Queen.” He topped it off with the September release of his self-titled debut album, and rounded the bases as “My Way” (which was remixed by Drake), “Again,” and “679” popped on radio all year long, into the fall and winter months.

Fetty appeals to hip-hop heads and pop fans alike, with his unique blend of singing and rapping – which is not novel in itself, as a lot of rappers are trying to sing these days. However, Fetty might be the first to genuinely be a better singer than lyricist, whose off-key charm outweighs his oft-clumsy lyrics. As David Berman once said, all my favorite singers couldn’t sing, and that includes Fetty.
