Dallas’ First Class Problems — Chauffeur, Personal Chef or Makeup Artist?

Now Hear This

BY // 05.09.19

I still love hearing a Highland Park friend fess up to First-Class problems. That said, I think we all need some of those.

For this week’s PaperCity Dallas Now Hear This office question, I decided to ask my colleagues what they would rather have: A full-time 1). chef 2). driver/chauffeur or 3). hair and makeup person on your personal team.

Christina Geyer, Dallas Editor-in-Chief

First-class problems! I would opt for a full-time driver to cart me around town. This is not merely a selfish decision — the roads will be a much safer place without me behind the wheel.

There are so many pros to having your own chauffeur.

Can I suggest one more request to my list of wants (or shall we call them needs?)

To the three options Billy gave us — chef, chauffeur, hair and makeup artist — I would like to add the option of a pilot and private plane, of course.

After shipping each issue — and during any stressful situation in general — I always get the compulsive urge to leave town, ASAP. Having a pilot and plane on hand would make this much more feasible. In fact, you might never see me again.

I have actually pondered this for many years. I think I am a good driver, but my mom used to point out that “perhaps not the best” — like her.

That said, I really think having a chauffeur would be ideal. It would allow me to multi-task. I am the type of person who is always reading or watching CNN while on the treadmill. I’d like to be able to do the same while going from destination to destination.

However, I put on a few pounds over the holidays which I am still holding. Christmas was more than a few weeks ago at this point, so maybe a personal chef that will make diet-friendly, yet tasty things like fish and vegetables, might be a good idea for a few months, and then I switch to a chauffeur.

I’d love to have a full-time chef. I know some people think cooking is relaxing, but it stresses me out. All of those ingredients and measurements. Also, I’m not a great cook.

I once tried to cook frozen meatballs in a cheap Tupperware container in the microwave. I didn’t know that heating up flimsy plastic for more than a minute or two is a no-no. It started smoking.

I’ve also tried baking cookies without softening the butter first, and man was that a mistake. I do not care for the time and patience it takes to cook a good meal. I want to eat the food as soon as I start cooking, therefore leading to a rushed and messy result. Having my own chef would be nice.

Is it an option to have all three?!

In all seriousness, I could do without a personal driver — although that does sound quite decadent. I don’t mind driving, and I love my car.

It’s a toss-up between a personal chef and hair and makeup because both would make my life way more efficient. But if I had to choose, I think I would pick a chef.

I used to be a freelance makeup artist, and I tend to keep my hair fairly simple, so while the idea of looking flawless all the time does sound appealing, and I am obsessed with my hair and makeup artist in Dallas, the fabulous Alex Guzman, having a personal chef would allow me to eat deliciously healthy meals.

My mom and sister are incredible cooks, and while I love to entertain, cooking is not a passion of mine. I am all about quick and easy recipes, but grocery shopping, prepping, cooking and cleaning is so time-consuming. I would love to have someone help me eat well and take all that stress away from me.

Maggie Wilson, Events and Partnerships Manager

What a great question! I’d love to have all three (who wouldn’t?), but if I could only choose one, I’d pick a personal hair and makeup team. I am at a complete loss when it comes to makeup and hair. I never have any clue what I’m doing.

I have sat through many makeup tutorials, but I’ve only come out with a very simple routine. It would be great to be able to get out of the shower and know that I wouldn’t have to worry about my hair or face, especially when attending an event on the weekend. Luckily, one of my best friends owns a makeup company, and sometimes I can bribe her with some wine to help me out with some makeup for a more glamorous event look!

Samantha Olguin, Sales Account Director and Director of Business Development, Dallas

Oh my gosh, do I have to pick just one?! If so, I would have to say a full-time hair and makeup person, but the full-time chef is a really close second.

This makeup and hair person would be seriously put to work because I do not like to put makeup on myself and my version of “doing my hair” is turning my head upside down and blow drying it that way. I have never completed a so-called “blow out” on myself and probably never will because that sounds so hard.

I have never been good with hair, therefore, mine simply is always hanging board straight (because it is like that naturally) or is in a ponytail (usually the latter of the two). I would be over the moon for a routine hair wash (and head massage) and then the good curls.

By the good curls, I mean the ones that look like a wave but all in the same pattern around your head. I am really into those and have finally found the best lady who can middle part my calic-ridden hair and give me the good curls that last for almost two full days!

The chef would also be so lovely because maybe then I would really eat healthily and get into that “summer bod” shape we all aspire to!

They say its 80% what you eat and 20% exercise. So when you are me and your 80% consists of Whataburger, chicken tenders, chocolate anything and all the food found at Highland Park Village’s Honor Bar, that puts that summer bod in quite the pickle!

The full-time driver/chauffer would be nice, but really just for those I share the road with as I am a terrible driver so it would probably benefit the safety of those around me.

Linda Kenney, Account Executive

Without a doubt, the best addition to my contented life would be a chauffeur. The reasoning is simple — my husband is a talented cook, and I adore his ability to whip up meals that are delicious. I am loyal to my aesthetician and hair stylist of 20 and 30 years. I have no compelling reason to change either status quo.

I do have a compelling reason to be driven around the city. I have never enjoyed driving. Perhaps that is because I hit a fence while driving home from acquiring my license. It’s been downhill since.

One of my friends refuses to drive with me. My life would be improved by the addition of a chauffeur. Perhaps he or she could be French, and I could practice my French while safely ensconced in the back seat.

Meryn Kennedy, Dallas Intern

I would definitely want a chef! When I get home from a long day, full of classes and volleyball workouts, I rarely want to cook. Actually, I rarely want to lift a finger. So, the idea of having someone cook for me whenever I need it sounds like heaven.

If you ever have something you want our team to address, shoot us your thoughts via social media or email (@papercitydallas on Instagram; facebook.com/papercitymagdallas on Facebook; or yours truly, [email protected]). Or, better yet send a message to the office, handwritten on the Smythson stationery of your choice — and feel free to include a bottle of Veuve. Champagne really helps get the ideas flowing.
