George H. W. Bush’s Funeral Schedule and Complete Houston and Texas A&M Public Viewing Guide: Everything You Need to Know for Remembering 41

All across the country, people are mourning the loss and celebrating the life of George H. W. Bush. The Navy war hero died Saturday night at age 94, just seven months after the loss of his beloved wife Barbara Bush. His very last words were reportedly “I love you, too,” to his son, George W. Bush, over speakerphone.

This week, the entire country celebrates the 41st President’s memory throughout official ceremonies in Washington, D.C., and Houston, Spring and College Station. He will be eventually laid to final rest at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University.

Devoted fans of the president can watch the proceedings on television. Every major network and cable news channel will broadcast the state funeral services and arrival and departure ceremonies held on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Monday, President Bush was flown from Ellington Field in Houston to Joint Base Andrews in Washington, D.C., with his trusted service dog Sully.

Monday, December 3, 6:30 pm  — Wednesday, December 5, 7:45 am

The public is invited to pay their respects to President Bush as he lies in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. President Bush is the 12th president to be formally honored there.

Wednesday, December 5

10 am

The private, televised state funeral ceremony for President Bush will be held at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. George W. Bush — the president’s son — and close friends (former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney of Canada and former Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson) will speak at the service. Jon Meacham, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian who wrote George H.W. Bush’s biography, also will be given a chance to talk.

President Trump, whose relationship with the Bush family has been combative, will attend the state funeral, but he has not been invited to speak.

11:30 am

The departure ceremony from the Washington National Cathedral will begin.

12:15 pm

The departure ceremony will be held at Joint Base Andrews for President Bush’s remains to return to Houston.

4:30 pm

An arrival ceremony will be held at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base.

5:45 pm

An arrival ceremony will be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

Wednesday, December 5, 5:45 pm — Thursday, December 6, 5 am

The public is invited to pay their respects to Bush, a longtime Houstonian by choice, as he lies in repose at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara worshipped at St. Martin’s for more than 50 years.

To attend the public repose, visitors must take the free shuttle service from Second Baptist Church in Houston to St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. The shuttle will run continuously from Wednesday at 5:30 pm to Thursday at 5:30 am.

Thursday, December 6

10 am

The funeral service will be held at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

11:15 pm

The departure ceremony is set to begin at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church.

12:30 pm

President Bush’s casket is scheduled to leave for College Station by train. The funeral procession travels on George Bush Drive to the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station.

3:45 pm

The arrival ceremony will be held at Texas A&M University.

4:15 pm

President Bush will be buried in his family plot behind the Bush library, next to his wife, former First Lady Barbara Bush, and their daughter Robin.
