Astros World Series Art Party to Build Anticipation for the Home Opener: Houston’s Going Astros Crazy — All the Events You Need to Know

BY // 03.31.18

The excitement of the Houston Astros’ home opener is almost here, but there’s an arty warmup this weekend. If it feels like it was just yesterday that the Astros won the World Championship, you can relive those moments by watching Opie Otterstad — an artist who is around the team regularly — paint live and unveil his World Series artwork, including the official celebration painting on Saturday.

It takes place at the Astros Art Celebration at the Off the Wall Gallery, right next to the Neiman Marcus valet parking lot and the Orange Garage in the heart of The Galleria.

Festivities run from 2 to 5 pm and include a tailgate party and ballpark bites. Now, that’s getting into the heart of baseball art.

Opie Otterstad — who almost always wears a distinctive hat — will make three other appearances at Off the Wall Gallery in the coming weeks (April 6, 7 and 8). The Astros World Series Artwork Collection will be display through April 15 at Off the Wall Gallery. Admission is free.

Of course, when Monday comes around, it’s time for some actual baseball again at Minute Maid Park. Bars and restaurants around Houston are on the ball, hyping up this Astros-Orioles Home Opener with drink specials and viewing parties.

PaperCity has rounded up some places to live it up outside of the ballpark. Peanuts and crackerjacks or not, get spirited, y’all.

Opening Day Street Fest

Downtown, by Minute Maid Park

Fans with tickets to the game can attend the street fest hosted by Budweiser, which runs from 1 to 5:30 pm. Astros manager A.J. Hinch, general manager Jeff Lunhow and certain 2017 World Champions will be there early, dong interviews. Texas’ band The Emotions will play live music throughout the event. Games, local food trucks, yard games, face painters, caricaturists, inflatables and more make it a family-friendly party.

Lucky’s Pub

801 St. Emanuel

Block out some time for this opening day block party. This EaDo event features tons of music, Rod Ryan of 94.5 The Buzz, live bands and Booth Pimp DJ’s. Food trucks like The Burger Joint, Happy Endings and Sticky’s Children will line the sidewalks. Jim Beam drink specials will be served in commemorative Astros cups.

Merch is a must, and you can expect Astros-inspired clothing from EaDo Shirt Co. and Running Game Clothing Co. Autographed memorabilia from Diamond in the Rough and My Idol will be available.

The first 500 people get a free koozie.
