Houston’s Best Bloggers Reveal Their Favorite City Picks: Where the Most Stylish Women in the Bayou City Roam

BY // 08.05.18

Houston’s top bloggers work hard, trying out the multitude of the city’s newest and best restaurants, scouring for the best shops and attractions worth hitting, so their loyal readers can follow along for weeknight and weekend inspiration.

We asked Houston’s bloggers what would be on their H-Town bucket list. Consider this the stylish insider’s guide to America’s fourth-largest city:

“If I had to pick my favorite thing in Houston, it’s probably our Museum District. There are a total of 19 different cultural institutions — from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Health Museum to the Houston Zoo and the Rothko Chapel — nestled in the walkable area.

“I love taking my Little Sister from the Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star program to explore HMNS or grabbing some beers and blankets on a Friday night to enjoy a free show at Miller Outdoor Theater.”

“My favorite place in Houston is Buffalo Bayou. Training for the Houston Marathon, I’ve probably run hundreds of miles along the bayou trails and fallen in love along the way. I’m obsessed with the downtown views and it’s pretty cool to catch the bats emerge from Waugh Bridge at sunset.

“On weekends, I like to grab brunch at the Kitchen at the Dunlavy — the chandeliers are so whimsical and the avocado toast is my favorite! Also, many people don’t know that you can rent kayaks or SUP boards to paddle down the bayou. When you’re on the water, you can’t hear any traffic or see any buildings, and it totally transports you to a whole other world. It’s so fun to see the city from that angle!”

“My husband and I are both native Houstonians and foodies. We love to find spots to add to our growing list of the best-of-the-best food in Houston! This list is what I consider the must-do (or shall I say, must-eats) in Houston.

“For the best bread, mussels, and french fries, Café Rabelais in Rice Village. For the best filet beef fajitas and margaritas, El Tiempo. For the best fall-off-the-bone ribs and brownie a la mode, Houston’s. For the best sushi, Kata Robata. For the best pork breakfast tacos, Buffalo Grille on Bissonett. For the best grilled chicken pita and smoothies, Island Grill. For the best ceviche, Goode Co. Seafood. For the best table side guacamole, Escalante’s on Westheimer.

“Suddenly, I’m very hungry. I wonder why…”

“Emmaline is the perfect spot to meet a friend for lunch plus they have the best flat bread. I also love taking my boys to the Museum of Natural Science in Sugar Land and we also regularly visit Kemah Boardwalk. As a family one of our favorite hole in the wall restaurants is Good Ole Boys in Katy.

“They have the best deviled eggs and the boys love their grilled cheese.”

“Our favorite date night spot is Coltivare in the Heights. The food is so amazing that it’s worth the wait – which can sometimes be an hour or longer. Coltivare has a great outdoor garden area where you can sip a drink as you wait – or if you get there when it opens, you’ll likely be seated right away. We like that it’s a smaller restaurant and the menu is incredible. We love the black pepper spaghetti, roasted cauliflower appetizer and, of course, the pizza.

“We also recently had our anniversary dinner at Emmaline and the food was fantastic and I loved the covered porch area where we were seated with floor-to-ceiling windows – it made for a great atmosphere.

“Our favorite kid-friendly place to eat is Local Foods at Heights Mercantile – we eat there every week! It’s across the street from Donovan park so the kids can get some play time in before you cross the street to enjoy lunch or dinner. Their harvest salad is a favorite as is the crunchy chicken sandwich and pozole soup.

“Pro tip: Their grilled cheese is made with their famous pretzel bread and is a favorite of our kids and in the summer time it’s served with a delicious side of fresh watermelon! There’s also a Cloud 10 Creamery across from Local Foods for a post-meal treat if you’re not too full!

“A favorite brunch spot is Backstreet Café in River Oaks. I love their eggs Benedict and the atmosphere is so fantastic. Tons of light floods into the ’30s-era house-turned-restaurant and they have such a beautiful outdoor dining space (but our favorite area to dine is their second floor!)

“A favorite of ours for brunch with the kids is Sweet Paris Crêperie. They have a location in Rice Village but their Town and Country location is right by the area’s large green courtyard where the kids love to play. Everything on the Sweet Paris menu is incredible, but our favorites are the classic Nutella and strawberries, the Bonne Maman, the Houstonian and the La Canadienne – appropriate, since that’s where I’m originally from.

“I’m not much of a mall shopper these days since I order almost everything online, but lately we’ve loved checking out the different boutiques and antique stores on 19th street in The Heights. There’s a fantastic kids toy store called Big Blue Whale Toys & Curiosities and they’ve always got fun activities for kids on the weekends. We’ll go to Torchy’s Tacos for lunch, swing by Steel City Pops on 20th street (the blood orange, watermelon and strawberry cream are favorites) and then stop into Boomtown Coffee for iced coffee or lattes (they have the best almond milk!)

“In the fall when it’s not sweltering out, we love taking the kids to the Houston Zoo. They bathe the elephants at around 10 each morning and it’s quite a treat to watch – especially the baby elephants! We also love the theater district – I used to work at TUTS and we still regularly see shows – our last one was Hamilton! Houston has an incredible theater district and our ballet is topnotch.

“If you’re visiting Houston, I’d definitely consider seeing a performance after dinner one night while you’re in town.”
