Two Texas Teens and a Cool Kid’s Last Solo Moment: Houston’s Best Concerts Are Under the Radar

BY // 08.05.16

Houston’s concert scene brings plenty of action, but we want you to know about the under-the-radar shows as well as the monster acts. PaperCity’s Matthew Ramirez cuts through the noise to find the best things to see around town.

PETERSON BROTHERS, SATURDAY, AUGUST 6 @ McGONIGEL’S MUCKY DUCK

They may be young, but don’t be fooled: The Peterson Brothers are seriously talented. Hailing from Bastrop, Texas, the two teens (Glenn just finished high school; Alex is only 16) have built a name and reputation for themselves the old-fashioned way: studying their craft, sharpening their skills, and playing tons of shows.

In addition, they have been fortunate enough to open for such big names as the late B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Lisa Marie Presley, Buddy Guy, Los Lonely Boys, and others. Their sound is a blissful mix of blues, rock, soul, and funk — mixed with a youthful vitality. Definitely don’t miss a chance to see one of the most unique acts touring the region today.

CHUCK INGLISH, SATURDAY, AUGUST 6 @ WAREHOUSE LIVE

As one half of the Cool Kids, the hipster-approved rap group who had a monster 2008 and led one critic to assume that they would be bigger than Drake, Chuck Inglish has spent the time after the Cool Kids bubble burst building up a solid solo catalog, while former bandmate Sir Michael Rocks did the same. That all changed, however, with the recent announcement that Inglish and Rocks will be reuniting under the Cool Kids banner soon, bringing the dream of 2008 back to reality for another go-round.

Inglish probably has the better solo career, though, so this is your final chance to see him before the reunited Cool Kids undoubtedly play bigger stages for the inevitable comeback tour. Who knows: Maybe they really will be bigger than Drake this time. Local fave Fat Tony opens.
