Where the Houston Texans Eat — J.J. Watt, D.J. Reader and More Reveal Their Favorite Houston Restaurants: Plus, Why Johnathan Joseph and Beyonce are on the Same Page

BY // 08.16.18

Where do the Houston Texans fuel up when they’re not bringing down the house? What are the NFL stars’ favorite Houston restaurants?

We already know defensive end J.J. Watt and safety Kareem Jackson are devoted fans of Killen’s Barbecue. Watt goes for the brisket, beef ribs, housemade sausage and creamed corn. Jackson typically orders pork ribs, brisket and smoked turkey.

As for the rest of the players… well, we asked them. Read on as the Texans reveal their top Houston restaurant picks.

Christian Covington — No. 95

Although the season ended early last year for defensive lineman Christian Covington after he tore his biceps, he’s fully recovered and ready to play this fall. Where does the Rice University alum dine out in the Bayou City?

Upper Kirby sushi hotspot Kata Robata, where his order includes peppercorn sashimi and “any type of sushi roll,” Covington says.

Johnathan Joseph — No. 24

Celebs from Houston-born Beyonce to veteran Houston Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph can’t get enough of swank Washington Avenue steakhouse, B&B Butchers and Restaurant. While Beyonce usually goes for Wagyu carpaccio and creme brulee, Joseph sinks his teeth into the house burger.

It comes with a 10-ounce beef patty, featuring a mix of filet and USDA Prime, dry-aged in-house.

“They have a really good burger. I get it well done, without a bun and with a side of French fries,” Joseph tells PaperCity.

Treston Decoud — No. 31

When Treston Decoud, a fifth-round draft pick from Oregon State in 2017 who shifted from cornerback to safety this offseason, grabs a meal on the town, he heads to Tilman Feritta’s upscale athlete playhouse Mastro’s Steakhouse.

“The restaurant has a good vibe and scenery,” Decoud says of the spot in the new Post Oak Hotel complex. “It’s top of the line. I love seafood so the lobster mac ‘n’ cheese is perfect for me. And you can’t go wrong with the steaks. I’ll probably get some mushrooms, too.”

Mastro’s bone marrow dish shows that is anything but just another steakhouse.

D.J. Reader — No. 98

When D.J. Reader, who Watt is touting as the best nose guard in the NFL, is not busy clogging up the middle of Houston’s defense, he takes times out to feast on the Ma’s Meatloaf at casual restaurant Punk’s Simple Southern Food in Rice Village. The all-beef loaf with tomato sauce that comes with brown gravy and a side of horseradish mashed potatoes particularly appeals to the Texas’ big man.

“It tastes like home. The consistency is super good. It’s just awesome,” he says.

Brian Peters — No. 52

Uber-fit linebacker Brian Peters is known to go the extra mile with his workouts, even training on off days. After working up an appetite, the special teams ace hits up posh River Oaks District steakhouse Steak 48 for a meal. With its extensive roster of steaks and seafood, it’s little wonder why.

We get about every appetizer on the menu, and then the surf and turf,” Peters says.

Benardrick McKinney — No. 55

Fellow linebacker Benardrick McKinney is on the same page as Peters when it comes to dining out. He also favors Steak 48. And while it’s hard to choose from the roster of chops, McKinney, who signed a five year, $50 million deal to stay with the Texans in June, has a clear favorite.

“The steaks are incredible – I get a T-Bone steak cooked medium well,” he says.

Brandon Dunn — No. 92

Cozy Upper Kirby restaurant Grace’s is at the top of defensive end Brandon Dunn’s restaurant list for a comfort food meal.

“I get the chicken fried chicken. Have you tasted it? There’s no explanation needed. It’s just good,” he says.

Dunn, who played in every game last season with eight starts, is primed to be a regular part of the defensive line rotation again this season.

Julien Davenport — No. 70

At 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, Texans’ starting left tackle Julien Davenport’s role is to protect quarterback Deshaun Watson’s blind side. On his night off, there’s no doubt where you’ll find him fueling up.

Pappadeaux, no question. They have really good seafood,” he says.

Davenport’s usual order at the upscale Cajun chain includes crab fingers and the Mississippi Catfish Opelousas with scallops, shrimp and dirty rice.

“The sauce they put on it is great,” Davenport tells PaperCity. “It mixes well with the dirty rice. It’s just a well put together dish.”
