The Craziest Scenes From Houston’s Icepocalypse: 20 Unbelievable Photos of the Storm That Closed Texas

BY // 01.17.18

Texans have had it up to here with the temperature being down to there. As of noon today, the temperature remained below freezing. In fact, thermometers read 19 degrees in Houston early Wednesday — a low the city hasn’t seen in some 22 years. It’s Day Two of Icepocalypse, and while the sleet, snow, and freezing rain have stopped, Houston is still largely shut down.

It’s true what they’re saying: Texas is Closed.

Schools from Houston to Pasadena, Deerpark to Tomball, are shut down for the second day in a row due to icy road conditions. (Most Houston kids have enjoyed an unexpected five straight days off with Martin Luther King Jr. Day observed on Monday.) According to Houston Transtar, the weather over the past two days has caused more than 30 road closures, and there are nearly 150 roadway locations with ice throughout the region.

After the historic, horrific Hurricane Harvey, you would think we’ve earned a break. For now, the best we can hope for is a break in the ice.

The mid-week break isn’t as welcome as say, a long weekend, and residents are starting to get stir crazy. I’d say Houstonians are getting cabin fever, but it’s not like we’ve got cabins. Those sound pretty good right about now.

We might not be able to warm you up, but PaperCity is here to cheer you up. We’ve rounded up some of the best Icepocalypse photos. What’s cooler than being cool? Ice cold.
