James Harden’s Hoops Party Brings Major Celebs to Houston: Your Must-Attend Events Guide With the Guru’s Weekend Picks

BY // 08.17.17

Houston’s weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Weekend Guru Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this weekly series.

Icha Gicha
Atlanta-based Mexican rapper Kap G is known both for his stirring lyricism, cool demeanor on the mic, and trademark Rogue-like streak in his hair. He’s built a steady fanbase over the years via a consistent stream of good music (as well as appearances in movies like Dope) that culminated with this year’s Supa Jefe, his full-length major-label debut album with Pharrell behind the boards.

He’ll hit the Warehouse Live  studio Thursday, August 17, with doors opening at 8 pm. Tickets start at $15.

Cole World
J. Cole went platinum with no features.” “You need to have a certain level of intelligence to really vibe to his music.” “Anybody want to admit they got a crush on me? Straight-laced J. Cole appeals to old-heads and younger kids looking for “lyricism” in their hip-hop, but he’s remained relevant through a sneaky series of memes often poking fun at himself — a no-frills, and at times overly-serious rapper

Still, Cole has a few undeniable songs in his catalog, and he caps a major moment by headlining at the Toyota Center this Friday, August 18. Doors open at 7 pm; tickets start at $29.50.

We’re Ready to Believe You
The conclusion of the Downtown Summer Movie Series at Main Street Square, a showing of the original 1984 Ghostbusters caps off a fun three-month-long destination for movie lovers. As always, the movie is free, and expect food trucks (serving beer and wine too), free seating, free parking, and a wholesome time. Don’t cross the streams!

Purple Stuff
Mayor Sylvester Turner has proclaimed August 20, 2017 “Big Moe Day” in Houston, and appropriately enough Screwston Records is celebrating the life of one of Houston’s certifiable hip-hop legends in style with the first-annual Big Moe Birthday Block Party.

Marking the 10-year anniversary of the Screwed Up Click member’s tragic early death, and presented by two local institutions via Wreckshop Nation and Screwston Records, Sunday, August 20 at 2121 Center Street is where every Houston hip-hop-head needs to be. It all kicks off at 3 pm and you can come hear legends like Lil Keke, ESG, and Big Pokey alongside rising stars like Propain, DJ XO, GT Garza, T-Wayne and many more.

There are also free Buffalo Bayou brews, free Topo Chico, and best of all, free entry with RSVP. Click here to do just that and pour one up for the original Barre Baby.

Three the Harden Way
James Harden is sharing the love this weekend.

Fresh off signing a $228 million extension that will keep him in Houston through his prime, and coming off a summer where the perennial All-Star and MVP candidate recruited fellow All-Star and Point God Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets, No. 13 is letting the city know Houston is where his heart resides. Tudor Fieldhouse at Rice University will be the site of the first-ever JH-Town Weekend, a series of charity basketball games whose main purpose for curious onlookers is of course to rub elbows with celebrities at the intimate confines of Rice.

Confirmed NBA players include: Chris Paul, Clint Capela, Demar DeRozan, Sixth Man of the Year Eric Gordon, John Wall, Tomball-native Jimmy Butler, Rockets Game 6 Clippers series playoff hero Josh Smith, newest Rocket P.J. Tucker, and more. Confirmed celebs include Travis Scott, Meek Mill, Slim Thug, Fabolous, and many more.

Come support Harden’s many scholarship efforts, and make the inaugural JH-Town Weekend a new tradition for the second-best player in Rockets franchise history. Games start at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday August 21 and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday August 22. There will be four teams with the semifinals on Saturday and a consolation and championship game on Sunday. Tickets start at just $15 and run up to $50.
