Women Rockers and Men with No Women: Houston’s Best Concert Picks Shake it up — The Guru Speaks

BY // 10.06.17

Houston weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity’s Weekend Guru Matthew Ramirez cuts through the clutter to give you the best options in this weekly series.

Infinite Jest
Vagabon, the stage name of Lætitia Tamko, is a powerful songwriter whose Infinite Worlds from early this year is a Top 10 record of the year candidate. Her indie rock songs feel particularly weighty, given the emotional tenor of her songwriting – the indie rock sound is 1990s influenced and guitar heavy, but the way she unites her weightless, moving voice over artful confessionals is unexpectedly moving, like if Bradford Cox had a tenor that could soar.

She’ll hit Walters Friday, October 6, in a must-see show for any serious independent music lover. Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, and one of my local faves, Pearl Crush, open. Doors open at 8 pm; tickets $10.

Are You Experienced?
Houston native and HSPVA graduate Robert Glasper is bringing his Grammy Award-winning prestige to the University of Houston’s Cullen Hall Friday, October 6. Presented by Da Camera, The Robert Glasper Experiment finds Glasper performing with his quintet, with whom he’s released two albums: Black Radio and Black Radio 2, and hits Cullen behind their most recent release, ArtScience.

A local elder statesman, Glasper has shared studio time and stages with everyone from Maxwell to Q-Tip to Kanye West. Friday, with show at 8 pm; tickets start at $42.50.

One Girl
Kali Uchis‘ star has been rising steadily since around 2014, when the Colombian-born singer became an instant Latinx fave by combining soft, 1960s-inspired vocals with a hip-hop flavor, a subtle twist on the flavor Lana del Rey brought to the scene (the logical conclusion to this was of course that del Rey has recently announced a national tour with Uchis as her opening act). By collaborating with everyone from Tyler, the Creator to Vince Staples to up-and-coming R&B prodigy Daniel Caesar, Uchis has steadily expanded her audience and style.

She’ll headline a Saturday night show at Warehouse Live‘s ballroom. Doors open at 8 pm and tickets $20; it’s listed as sold out, but secondhand tickets are readily available.

No Woman
Whitney released one of my favorite albums of 2016, and really, one of my favorite albums ever, with Light Upon the Lake, a 30-minute soul-inspired folk album as heartbreaking as it was uplifting, an unexpected meditation on loneliness and redemption from two guys who used to be in hip buzz bands like Smith Westerns and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

They’re coming through Houston again just months after playing an excellent early summer sold-out show at The Secret Group where they took time to praise the crowd, trash the Golden State Warriors, and say that James Harden was the rightful MVP. Saturday at House of Blues, with doors at 7 pm and tickets $17.
