Amid the Crazied Kate Upton and Justin Verlander Wedding Frenzy, Alex Bregman Low Key Steals the Show

BY // 11.07.17

Justin Verlander married Kate Upton in the magical wedding of any supermodel’s dreams… if you somehow haven’t heard. Jose Altuve is doing all sorts of cute Altuve things — from kissing Mickey Mouse at Disney World to sitting in Leslie Jones lap on Saturday Night Live.

And Carlos Correa and Daniella Rodriquez relived their on-field engagement on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night.

But another Houston Astro is low key winning the World Series celebration — and it’s not even really that close.

Alex Bregman is the surprise star of the party season. The Astros’ 23-year-old third baseman doesn’t have the career credentials of Verlander, the rep of Altuve or the pure star power of Correa, but he keeps popping up everywhere — and killing it.

Bregman also brings a little edge to his appearances, the sense that you don’t quite know what he’s going to say next. Heck, he might not know what he’s going to say next. During the Astros Saturday Night Live cameo, Bregman is the one who stands up to comedian Leslie Jones. He even gets a subtle little dig in.

“Here’s some Astros swag,” Bregman says, handing Yankees fan Jones a jersey and a hat, “so you can jump on the bandwagon too.”

That’s funny. That’s real. That’s Bregman. Jones seems to appreciate it too. She looks tempted to fire back and deviate from the script. Alex Bregman can do that to people. (Just ask the Texas Rangers.)

Bregman’s earned this spotlight time — he had as many big moments in the intense playoff sprint to the World Series championship as any Astro — and he appears determined to enjoy the heck out of it. There is Bregman popping up on Good Morning America in a black leather jacket and black hoodie.

There is Bregman at the New York Stock Exchange, brandishing a giant gavel. There is Bregman getting some face time with Miley Cyrus backstage at SNL. There is Bregman hanging out at Sports Illustrated’s New York offices, getting grief about his cracked iPhone. There is Bregman chilling at a New York Knicks game.

Waldo gets around less than this guy. Bregman told SI that he has 756 unread texts and estimates he’s only gotten about five hours of sleep since the World Series ended (which was last Wednesday).

Of course, Alex Bregman’s earned every minute of this fun. Then fact that he’s acting like many Astros fans imagine they’d act after winning the World Series only adds to his budding legend. Bregman is winning the party season because he’s being so real.

“I met Miley Cyrus,” Bregman says. “Life’s been crazy.”

Alex Bregman’s Wild New Life

Bregman is the kid who’s been let loose in a giant toy store after hours. You’d better believe he’s going to enjoy it. It’s refreshing. It’s fun. It’s how you want someone who’s just won a world championship to react.

The tendency is to sometimes look at the scrappy Bregman — the heady player smart enough to throw runners sprinting home from third out in the playoff’s biggest moments — as some underdog success story. But the truth is, he’s as talented as any Astro (with the exception of perhaps the uber-gifted Correa). Bregman came out of LSU as the No. 2 pick in the entire 2015 MLB draft.

The guy who finally won that epic World Series Game 5 for the Astros is a future star. This is the hitter who took both Chris Sale and Clayton Kershaw deep in the super pressurized cauldron of the playoffs. Alex Bregman just happens to act like a regular guy enjoying the time of his life. In process, no Astro’s Q-rating has taken a bigger jump than the kid who grew up idolizing Derek Jeter and never forgot what that’s like.

Bregman isn’t winning the Astros party season like Mark Madsen won those Lakers parades of the Shaq and Kobe era. Bregman is not some scrub dancing joke. He’s the real deal, which makes his party season romp all the more fun.

Bregman is not stopping any time soon either. He’s headed back to LSU to watch the Tigers’ football game with Arkansas this weekend (think he might get a nice reception?!)

Sorry Correa. And yes, even you Justin and Kate, must give way. This is Alex Bregman’s world — and everyone else will just have to fall into the happy conga line behind him.
