Dallas weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity‘s new events calendar offers a curated look at all of the best things to do in North Texas. But everyone can still use an expert.

Marc Maron: Hey, There’s More Tour

On Thursday night, stand-up comedian, podcaster, and Glow star Marc Maron is performing at Majestic Theatre. As host of the popular WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Maron has talked to some of the biggest celebrities and comedians since 2009, including Conan O’Brien, President Barack Obama, Robin Williams, and more. He has two stand-up specials on Netflix, Thinky Pain and Too Real, and can be seen in the Emmy-nominated TV series Glow, which just released its third season on Netflix.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Grab your (golden) tickets to see Roald Dahl’s legendary tale, Charlie and the Chocolate Factorythis Thursday, August 22 through Sunday, August 25. The show will take place at Winspear Opera House and will include songs from the original film like “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” along with a new score from the songwriters of Hairspray.

Chris Redd

Saturday Night Live cast member Chris Redd will perform five stand-up shows at Addison Improv this Thursday, August 22 through Saturday, August 24. Redd made his debut on Comedy Central in 2017 with a half-hour stand-up special and earned an Emmy for his original song “Come Back, Barack.” He’s starred in Chuck Lorre’s Netflix series Disjointed and appeared in Judd Apatow’s Love.

Heart: Love Alive Tour

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Heart, will be stopping in Dallas on their Love Alive Tour this Friday, August 23. Band founders and sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson will be joined by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Elle King (“Ex’s & Oh’s) at Dos Equis Pavilion starting at 7 pm. The two sisters paved the way for female-fronted rock when they released their debut album in 1975, and have released 15 albums since then.

O.A.R.

Also on this Friday, Maryland-based rock band O.A.R. is coming to Toyota Music Factory on The Mighty O.A.R. Summer Tour. SiriusXM The Pulse is presenting the tour with American Authors and Rozzi Crane, live in concert at The Pavilion. Since 2001, O.A.R. has sold close to two million albums and more than two million concert tickets. Their latest hit “Miss You All The Time” is one of my new favorites and I fondly remember rocking out to “Love and Memories” on Singstar Amped in 2007.

VolleyFest 2019

This Saturday, the Dallas Sports & Social Club is hosting its final sand volleyball tournament of the summer, VolleyFest 2019. The tournament will be at Sandbar Cantina & Grill in Deep Ellum from 10 am to 5 pm, and will be accompanied by a DJ and cold beer. Each team is guaranteed three matches per a division, which include Recreational (6v6), Intermediate (4v4), and Competitive (4v4). Age requirements limit it to 21 and up only.

Austin Eastciders Block Party

Attention Dallas foodies. The Austin Eastciders Block Party in Bishop Arts is happening this Saturday from 2 pm to 6 pm. Dallasites101 and CultureHype have teamed up with the cider company to bring us four hours of food tastings paired with different flavors of ciders at multiple restaurants around Bishop Arts.

For $10 online or $12 at the door, you’ll receive a passport to try it all and a souvenir glass. Cider flavors from the original dry cider to more adventurous Ruby Red grapefruit will be available to try, as well as bites from Melt, Taco y Vino, Neighborhood Cellar, Tribal Cafe, and more local spots.

Cowboys vs. Texans

Dallas Cowboys fans, the wait is over. America’s favorite football team will take on the Houston Texans in their first home game of preseason at AT&T Stadium in Arlington this Saturday at 6 pm. Get dressed up head to toe in your Cowboys gear and cheer on Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper.

Tickets start at $64, which is pretty reasonable compared to regular season prices. Plus, this is the third preseason game when the starters typically actually play a decent amount.

The Smashing Pumpkins

Throw it back this Saturday and head to The Smashing Pumpkins concert at Dos Equis Pavilion at 7 pm. The Chicago-based alternative rock band that formed in 1988, is teaming up with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and special guests AFI. Over the years, the band has experienced several lineup changes, but the current band features Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha and Jeff Schroeder. Former Oasis singer Gallagher is now backed up by 10-piece group, The High Flying Birds.

Nelly, TLC, and Flo Rida

The most exciting event for the weekend, and maybe the month, is the TLC/Nelly/Flo Rida concert at Toyota Music Factory. Starting at 7 pm, T-Boz and Chilli are expected to perform hits like “No Scrubs” and “Waterfalls.” The group formed in 1990, along with Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes (who later died in a car crash) and became incredibly popular in the R&B scene.

Hip-hop stars TLC, Nelly, and Flo Rida are collaborating on a 21-city North American tour, with a huge stop at the Irving outdoor amphitheater.
