A New Gourmet Donut Shop, Super-Sized Cocktails and a New Orleans’ Retreat: Houston’s Must-Try Restaurant Menus

BY // 01.27.16

Houston’s restaurant scene has gained a number of new restaurants as of late, making the chase for new dishes a never-ending process. But the hunt for fresh fare shouldn’t be reserved for grand openings only. The city’s existing menus are always changing, offering new flavors and twists on every page.

Here are four new and exciting menus in our restaurant queue that you should try:

LEE’S FRIED CHICKEN AND DONUTS
601 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77007
Heights newcomer Lee’s Fried Chicken and Donuts opened roughly four months ago, but owner Lee Ellis is wasting no time updating the chicken- and donut-centric menu. Significant changes are already under way, starting with the restaurant’s star offering — the fried chicken. Ellis concocted a new blend of spices to infuse the chicken with a bolder flavor. Frankly put, the new formula is kicking its predecessor’s butt.

In addition to the upgraded poultry, the restaurant also debuted multiple new donut flavors, including the red velvet cake donut; the B. Simpson donut topped with Butterfinger pieces and chocolate drizzle; the Oreo donut; the double dip donut, a chocolate cake donut topped with chocolate icing and chocolate chips; the cherry bomb donut, a chocolate cake donut topped with cherry icing; and the M&M donut.

GLASS WALL
933 Studewood St., Houston, TX 77008
Robust flavors land at Studewood Hospitality Group’s American eatery Glass Wall via hearty new menu additions. The debut, which coincides with the restaurant’s 10th anniversary, brings winter-themed dishes like venison pot pie (made with New Zealand venison, andouille sausage, potatoes, carrots, green peas and pearl onions, all topped with cheddar ale crust; oven-roasted cornish hen stuffed with tasso ham, corn bread, apples, pearl onion and a mushroom compote; and an oxtail soup.

Seafood additions like the miso-marinated chilean sea bass (my personal favorite) and the beach boy risotto — saffron risotto tossed with Gulf shrimp, mussels, clams, white fish, scallops and squid — also make an appearance. A new brunch menu is also on the way from the group that also runs the Brooklyn Athletic Club and The Del.

NIGHTINGALE ROOM
308 Main St., Houston, TX 77002
Downtown cocktail bar and lounge Nightingale Room is making major changes with the unveiling of a new cocktail menu. The launch marks only the second menu change since the bar opened, in 2014. Created by owners Mike Criss and Bobby Heugel, the menu reflects Nightingale’s evolving nightclub flair and aims for libations that are bigger, bolder and a lot more fun.

Of the 10 new drinks, the Inconceiva-Bowl is a first-of-its-kind cocktail for the club. The super-sized shareable drink is made with Jamaican rum, Overproof rums, Falernum, lime, honey and grenadine and served with a dramatic flaming presentation.

Music has also joined the mix; upcoming shows will include Brad Boyer, Gio Chamba, Megafauna, Space Villians, The WaxaholicsKing Finn and Night Drive. Tip: Don’t miss the vinyl listening party for The Suffers, which takes place on Wednesday, February 10. View Nightingale’s revamped menu here

BRENNAN’S OF HOUSTON
3300 Smith St.
Mardi Gras is just days away, but if you can’t make it to New Orleans to experience the city’s authentic fare, Brennan’s of Houston has you covered. Coinciding with Fat Tuesday (February 9), the restaurant will hold a Mardi Gras fest, which comes as no surprise, considering Brennan’s is the sister restaurant to New Orleans’ iconic Commander’s Palace.

The festive bash will feature a faux float, bead tossers, a palm reader, and, of course, a Texas-style Mardi Gras menu. For $65, guests can enjoy a three-course prix fixe menu that includes highlights like the Louisiana crawfish enchilada, wood-grilled American snapper, the Niman Ranch Tomahawk pork chop, Vieux Carre beignets topped with Café Au Lait ice cream, and the Mardi Gras mambo king cake.
