Rock ‘n’ Roll Coffee Roars into Houston: Aerosmith’s Drummer Targets the Seinfeld Crowd With New Business Venture

BY // 09.02.16

He’s not a businessman. He’s a business, man.

Joey Kramer has sat behind the drum kit for Aerosmith since 1970, but nearly 50 years of keeping time for the Boston-bred group — often dubbed “America’s greatest rock and roll band” (in the same vein The Clash branded themselves as “the only band that matters”) — doesn’t mean Kramer’s interests are limited to music. Aerosmith is the biggest-selling American rock band of all time, and with that success comes lots and lots of touring. And typical pitfalls of touring tend to be bad sleep, bad food, and, perhaps most importantly, bad coffee.

With the declaration that coffee is “something we can’t do without,” (and, like any good businessman, having noted that it’s behind only oil in the commodities-trading world), Kramer partnered with Comfort Foods to bring Rockin’ & Roastin’ — his self-described “baby” — into the world. After being an online-only venture for a year, in 2013 Rockin’ & Roastin’ became available in stores, and as of 2015 the brand has been available in several H-E-B locations across Texas, including several in Houston.

But the latest announcement for the brand is Kramer’s partnership with Sugar Land’s state-of-the-art entertainment venue, Smart Financial Centre, scheduled to open for business in January 2017 (Jerry Seinfeld will be the center’s first act). Rockin’ & Roastin’ is already the official in-house coffee for House of Blues restaurants/concert venues across the nation (including the location on Caroline in Houston), and Kramer, who is now a Texan (he and his wife live near San Antonio) will make his presence known in another world-class venue.

The Smart Financial Centre, a partnership with ACE SL and the City of Sugar Land, occupies 38.5 acres off U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard, and can seat as many as 6,400 spectators. Aside from Seinfeld, Smart has added three more big-name performers to its 2017 lineup: Don Henley solo, and Steve Martin and Martin Short, who will perform together.

Kramer’s coffee with a “rock ‘n’ roll attitude” will be available at the center’s concession stands and in the suites, and VIP lounge. Imagine Seinfeld, a famously big coffee drinker, imbibing a strong cup of R&R from Ethiopia (the organic beans in two other varieties hail from Sumatra and Guatemala) – will he know it’s from one of the men behind “Dude Looks Like a Lady” before he takes the stage?

Whether Aerosmith will perform in Sugar Land is unknown (frontman Steven Tyler is currently on a solo tour promoting his recent country record), but  we hope Kramer will not pass up the synergistic opportunity to bring the iconic band to south Texas. He did confirm the group will tour in 2017, but did not reiterate Tyler’s insistence that it will be a “farewell tour.” Until then, keep your eyes peeled for an announcement (including a potential brick-and-mortar cafe based around R&R), and stay woke with the strong beans from Rockin’ & Roastin’.
