Working out is hard, and boring workouts are even harder. Luckily, Dallas offers plenty of ways to break your exercise rut and have fun getting fit. Try something new, and maybe a little strange, at these five Dallas fitness events. Puppies, Beyoncé and mermaids await.
Puppy Yoga
When we heard about goat yoga — the strange fitness trend that hit Dallas earlier this summer — we were pretty surprised that it was even a thing (not that we weren’t intrigued).
But when we realized that Friends of Northaven Trail are holding a yoga class with puppies in the mix, we wondered why no one had thought of it sooner. The non-profit organization is teaming up with Operation Kindness to host an all-level puppy yoga class by Agile Kinetics & CorePower Yoga on September 9. Tickets are $15 and puppies are provided (and available for adoption).
If you’d rather try the goat version, head to Four Bullets Brewery in Richardson for a Rescue Goat Yoga Class on August 31. Tickets are $35 and proceeds benefit Here’s Your Reminder Project & Lone Star Ranch and Rescue.
Beyoncé Ballet
Forget the prim and proper ballet classes you know. Beyoncé Ballet at Arts Mission Oak Cliff will teach you classic ballet moves with a bumping modern soundtrack. The beginner-friendly class is a fun and high-energy way to tone up, learn some new dance moves, and show your love for Queen B.
Check the Arts Mission Facebook or Eventbrite pages for upcoming classes. Each class costs $18.
Saturday Social Donut Ride
Finding fitness motivation can be difficult. Local Hub Bicycle Company makes it a bit easier with their Saturday Social Donut Ride, dangling the promise of fried goods in front of you while you power through a long bike ride.
The next ride is on Saturday, August 19 at 9:30 am.The 10 to 15 mile trip starts at Local Hub and ends at Top Pot Donuts, pointing out hotspots for donuts, coffee, tacos, and more on the way.
African Dance with Fihankra Dance & Fitness Studio in Dallas
Fihankra Dance & Fitness Studio hosts fun and free African Dance classes in Klyde Warren Park on a regular basis (check the park’s website for details). Bring along the whole family for a workout and unique dance lesson on Sunday, August 20 at 11:30 a.m.
Mermaid School
Yes, this is exactly what it sounds like. Adventure Scuba in Plano will train you to be a mermaid. The scuba and snorkeling center’s resident mermaid, Moira Dobbs teaches newcomers how to swim like a fish in special fintails. Mermaid School has sessions for adults and children.
The class costs $99, plus $15 tail rental (if you don’t have your own mermaid gear on hand). The next adult class is Thursday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m. Reserve your spot here.
