What

Since its origins in 16th century Italy, the salon has been a staple of conversation and the discussion of ideas in the West. Never has it flourished as it is flourishing today in the U.S. Salons are common features of all sorts of cultural institutions, from museums to opera companies. The Institute’s Friday Night Salon has been convening monthly since 1997, marked by a distinctive practice: its members represent a broad cross-section of our city—different ages, vocations, and cultural tastes—and they engage in conversation about topics they themselves choose. At its best, the Institute’s Friday Salon is the ultimate exercise in democratic deliberation—a rare opportunity for civil discourse in community. Join us.
