Rice University professor, Dr. Judith Roof, PhD, will be at The Health Museum outlining the different factors and effects of the 1918 ‘Spanish’ Influenza in the U.S. During her presentation “Reading the Signs of the 1918 ‘Spanish’ Influenza”. Dr. Roof will provide a thorough introduction to situate the 1918 influenza epidemic and an overview of the various contributors responding to the influenza epidemic in the U.S. Through the study of advertisements, government-issued pamphlets and news reports about mortalities, Dr. Roof will highlight the conflicting messages about contagion, treatments, and possible medications, and decisions of quarantine and movement of troops that were issued during the 1918 influenza.

Dr. Roof will conclude her presentation with a close look at the often-disastrous effects of the conflicting messages in public discourse during the 1918 influenza. Medical professionals will be able to examine the effects of conflicting public messages during this time, and the continuing confusion the interplay of government, medical, and public knowledge can cause in contemporary health crises. In addition, each attendee will learn to 1. describe and identify the different actors (U.S government, army, medical professionals, and citizens) who influenced the debate during and on the 1918 influenza and, 2. analyze media outlets like advertisements, news reports, and government issued warnings published during this epidemic.
