What

Houston is going through a revival of its public green spaces; from the recently completed McGovern Centennial Gardens, Buffalo Bayou Park, and Discovery Green, to the established Hermann Park, Japanese Garden and Bayou Bend Gardens, Houstonians more than ever are having a love affair with Green. Gardens highlight our complicated relationship with nature – to contain but let grow, to revere or destroy – all charged by man’s unfailing desire to control its environment.

In the exhibition The Bayou Botanist: 365 days in Houston’s GardensCelan Bouillet explores our relationship with Houston’s green spaces through a series of large-scale paintings and mixed media works on paper. The paintings resemble contemporary tapestries that blend animals, plants, and animals into complex patterns. Bouillet depicts the overwhelming vastness of nature being contained within a rectangular form – mimicking the typical confines of a garden. Other pieces in the show include large cut canvases casting shadows of blooms and leaves to create another dimension to the work.

The paintings will be on display at The Silos at Sawyer Yards from September 6 – September 24. The opening will be held on Saturday, September 10 from 5 – 8:30pm. The event is free and all are welcome to attend.

The Bayou Botanist is generously funded by a grant from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
