What
Houston History Alliance presents a full-day conference, The History of Houston’s Musical Soul, which includes a pop-up history museum.
The day begins with a keynote address by Joe Nick Patoski, “Houston, The Action Town.” Patoski is the biographer of Texas music greats Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Nelson and Selena. Panels trace Houston’s musical roots and evolution and feature renowned Texas musicologists and specialists. The Houston History Educator Award will also be presented during the conference.
Panel topics include:
- Texas Tenors to Oilin’ Up: the Soul of Houston Jazz
- Playing Both Sides of the Tracks: Houston R&B and Honky-Tonk in the Mid-20th Century featuring a mini performance by Johnny Bush, country singer, musician and drummer and author of the Willie Nelson hit song, “Whiskey River”
- Houston Record Labels and Artists: 1940s to 1960s
- From Rhythm and Blues to Chopped and Screwed…And Folk Music Too! Popular Music Collections in UH and Rice Libraries
- The Evolution of Latino Music in Houston
- Houston’s House of Hits: The Eight-Decade Legacy of SugarHill Studios
- The Roots of Houston Hip Hop
Featured panelists include: Joe Nick Patoski, Sean Fitzpatrick, Rick Mitchell, Robert Morgan, Lizette Cobb, Shelley Carrol, Craig Green, Michael Corcoran, John Nova Lomax, Vince Lee, Julie Grob, Mary Manning, Norrie Guthrie, Natalie Garza, Alex LaRotta, Dan Workman, Andrew Bradley, Roger Wood, Maco Faniel, Lance Scott Walker, and Jason “Flash Gordon Parks” Woods.
Tickets are $65.00 per person and include lunch from Triple J Barbecue.
