Dallas’ Own Roman Palazzo: A New Destination Spot Takes Shape in Highland Park Village

BY // 03.06.17

In a New York Times fashion column penned by Bernadine Morris that appeared July 19, 1972, quick mention was made about a certain Roman collection: “Fendi is the fur house started by Adele Fendi. She runs it today with the aid of her five daughters. It has expanded into luggage and small leather goods. You see its handbags and carryalls on the streets of Rome, marked by the initial F …

The furs were designed by Karl Lagerfeld, the maverick German who works in Paris. He’s partial to suits with fingertip length jackets that look like poplin rain suits but are lined with sable, or a coat of the same material that is completely reversible. He also lines parchment-color otter with ermine and favors blond colors in sable, mink and ermine. Talk about permanent elegance.”

Permanent elegance, indeed. Forty-five years since this story appeared — and 91 years since Adele Casagrande Fendi and husband Edoardo Fendi first opened their fur and handbag shop on Rome’s Via del Plebiscito — Fendi is still the epitome of Italian luxury.

While some things have not changed (Karl Lagerfeld still oversees the creative direction, and Fendi is consistently famous for its colorful, otherworldly fur designs), really everything has changed. Today, Fendi is more than just collectible It-bags (i.e.: the Baguette bag, which debuted to sell-out status in 1997); it’s also coveted the world over for its extravagant women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, Fendi Casa collection of home furnishings, luxury timepieces, menswear, and fragrance.

Fendi has also become a destination, with the opening last year upon the occasion of its 90th anniversary of the Palazzo Fendi in Rome — a marvelous and glamorous boutique and furrier with a private apartment for VIPs, the Fendi Private Suites boutique hotel, and Zuma restaurant.

The new boutique in Dallas’ Highland Park Village, which opened quietly at the beginning of February, is our version of Fendi’s grand Roman Palazzo, with the fashion house’s full collections of womenswear and menswear, accessories, handbags, shoes, and furs.

A private, by-invitation opening party is slated for this month, and one can only hope that the Fendi contingent pops in for a glass or two of Prosecco.
