Demi Lovato Comes Home to Texas — and Reveals Plenty: Pop Star Preaches Girl Power in Unexpected Ways

BY // 09.13.17

Demi Lovato preaches the gospel of self-empowerment in everything she does. The pop star and native Texan has never been shy to share her personal struggles, or the strength it’s taken to overcome them. From her No. 1 New York Times Bestselling book, Staying Strong, to her sassy, chart-topping hits like “Confident,” and “Sorry Not Sorry,” Lovato’s message is one of perseverance – and unabashed girl power.

Her collaboration with Kate Hudson’s Fabletics is just another example. Lovato’s second collection for the trendy workout wear company brings bright colors, bold design, and ready-for-anything attitude.

But it empowers girls in a more significant way, as well; A portion of proceeds go towards the United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up Movement. Specifically, they go to Girl Up’s SchoolCycle initiative, which provides girls with bikes so they can get to school.

Last weekend, Demi made an appearance at the brand-new Fabletic’s store at Plano’s Legacy West to celebrate the launch of the new collection and meet fans. PaperCity took the chance to chat with the former Dallasite about her collection and what it means to be an empowered woman:

What was your inspiration for this collection?

The inspiration for this collection with Fabletics was just that I wanted it to be edgy and chic at the same time – and comfortable.

Fabletics is very empowering for women and I think it’s incredible that I get to do a line with them because of that. And proceeds go towards Girl Up… so I was really excited to work with them on that as well.

How often do you come back home to Dallas?

I come back to Dallas a few times a year. I try to come back to visit family, or go to a Cowboys game or whatever.

I love to go to Southlake Town Square and do a little shopping or go to the movies. I love to visit my childhood home, and sometimes I go to Mi Cocina.

What are your thoughts on being a role model?

I think it’s very important when you have the platform that I have to use your voice. And actually even if you don’t have the platform. You know, stand up for the things that you believe in and try to make a difference in your community in whatever way you can.
