Hermés Gets Into Punk: Iconic Luxury Brand Takes a Walk on the Wild Side — With Diamonds

BY // 11.07.17

Hermés is feeling punkish as well as a bit puckish these days with the latest incarnation of the Chaine d’ancre collection — Chaine d’ancre Punk. Hello, elongated safety pins encrusted with diamonds.

The luxury firm’s jewelry designer, Pierre Hardy, has taken the ultimate symbol of rebellion in the 1970s — the safety pin — and incorporated it into the line’s iconic maritime-inspired Chaine d’ancre. Thus, you have Hermés earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets brandishing the unusual adornment that acts as both a link and a clasp. No tattoos or piercings required for the rebellious revamp of the classic design.

Through the end of the month, the French fashion house will have the full collection of Chaine d’ancre Punk on display at Hermés in River Oaks District. This is only the third United States stop for the edgy collection with previous exhibitions held earlier this fall in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In celebration of the exhibition, Hermés hosted a private reception spotlighting the 35-piece assortment.

The collection comes in varieties of gold as well as silver, some pieces employing diamonds for the ultimate in the deconstructive notion of beautiful chains paired with safety pins. Prices range from around $650 to more than $10,000. As Vogue magazine noted in June, “It’s an incredibly chic way to toughen up your look for summer.”

The Chaine d’ancre, an Hermés classic, has been evolving and reinvented since it was first designed in 1938 by Robert Dumas, son-in-law of Emile Hermés. Dumas is said to have been inspired by a ship’s anchor chain and incorporated that with the house’s original roots in the horse’s harness. The result is the chain with a sporty yet chic allure that has proven popular for more than seven decades.
