Home Sweet Home: Iconic Dallas Nonprofit Moves Back to Where It All Began

BY India Pougher // 10.25.16

A beloved jewelry nonprofit — which just scored a major deal with Neiman Marcus — has relocated its Deep Ellum flagship to Snider Plaza, just a hop across the street from where the brand was first created at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Akola, which donates 100 percent of its profits to impoverished women in both Dallas and Uganda, offers its classic color, glass, and horn collections at the new store, plus a series of colorful zippered clutches, all handmade by the aforementioned women.

The boutique also offers its new fall contemporary collection, fashioned in Dallas with gold, gemstones, and silk-knotted beads.

SMU alum Brittany Underwood created Akola, which means “she works” in Uganda dialect, to empower women and transform the lives of children in poverty. So far, the company has built three training centers and drilled 23 water wells in Ugandan villages.

Akola ($10 to $200), 6827 Snider Plaza, 214.310.0965.
