The Week of Marchesa

BY // 11.13.14

Houston has made some new friends, and two very glamourous ones at that. The week of Marchesa consisted of several spottings of the elegant European duo, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, aka the designers behind the brilliant line. It all began on Wednesday night, where a select few were warmly hosted by Jana and Scotty Arnoldy for an intimate evening at their home. The following night was the big Catwalk for a Cure shebang with highlights including the presentation of Alexandra Knight’s award by Greggory Burk and a runway show featuring their gorgeous gowns- and shoes designed for Marchesa by Christian Louboutin. Friday morning the designers graced Saks Fifth Avenue with their presence, where I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing them, while perusing their one-of-a-kind gypsy inspired collection. The whirlwind week left us thinking… Why haven’t we hosted them before? Here, some notes from their last stop on the Houston tour.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRENT COLLECTION. FAVE PARTS OF IT?

Keren Craig: It’s a little bit Woodstock, gypsy feel with a modern twist. We shared the collection in London. We thought that was quite fitting. A lot of florals, a lot of bright colors.Unknown

IS THE ONE YOU ARE WEARING PART OF THE COLLECTION?

KC: It isn’t, but we like to keep the themes pretty similar between the collections.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THE MOVE FROM LONDON TO NY?

KC: Partly because of our business, because we found that here’s a strong customer base in NY. And my husband’s American so that was a large reason.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOU GET YOUR MOST INSPIRATION?

Georgina Chapman: You know we get it from all different areas. I think once we’ve decided on a theme we do a lot of research, we put together our big mood boards and I think when you’re a designer you take inspiration from everywhere. You really do. People you meet, anything visual, obviously imagery, movies, music. It really can come from anywhere.

WHAT’S THE ONE TREND WE ALL NEED TO SAY GOODBYE TO?

GC: Crocs. I think it’s okay for kids, but I just don’t think it’s okay for adults, but that’s a personal thing.

WHAT KEEPS YOU SANE ON THE ROAD?

KC: You know what I generally always travel with? My own pillow. There’s nothing worse than getting somewhere and their pillows are terrible! And always having something so you can skype and FaceTime with the kids.

GC: Yes! And some really good face cream because your skin tends to fall apart whenever you get on the plane.
