Wild Oscars Controversy Threatens to Obscure Fashion: The Best and Worst Dressed Movie Stars at the Academy Awards

BY // 02.27.17

The Academy Awards is arguably the most important awards ceremony of the year, and with such prestige comes great fashion responsibility (even when the night is engulfed by a historic controversy).

The coveted gold Oscar statue may take center stage inside Hollywood’s iconic Dolby Theater, but on the show’s red carpet, impeccable style is all that matters, and fashion’s biggest night did not disappoint.

Delivering some of the most alluring looks of the 2017 awards season, the carpet kicked off with a healthy dose of political activism, a theme which has been central throughout various awards shows including the Grammys and the Golden Globes.

Multiple stars donned blue ACLU ribbons in solidarity with the American Civil Liberties Union — the organization has most recently championed the thwarting of President Trump’s controversial immigration ban.

While the blue ribbons snagged the award for accessory of the night, they weren’t the only trend that made this year’s carpet memorable. The color white saw huge popularity amongst Hollywood’s most elite, with iterations from models Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad couture and Karlie Kloss in Stella McCartney.

However, the most ravishing rendition came from up-and-coming actress Hailee Steinfeld, who stunned in a white-hued couture floral gown by Ralph and Russo.

Some of the Oscar’s leading ladies opted for a metallic color palette like Emma Stone — who snagged the Best Actress Oscar for her role in La La Land — who sparkled in a gold Givenchy couture frock, and Janelle Monae, who appeared in Best Picture nominee Hidden Figures as well as Best Picture winner Moonlight, donned an extravagantly bejeweled Elie Saab number.

Also on the metallics train — Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts surprisingly flaunted a show-stopping gold Badgley Mischka gown and actress Jessica Biel wowed in gold thanks to Kaufmanfranco‘s pre-spring 2017 collection.

Best Supporting Actress winner Viola Davis made history last night as the first Black woman to win an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony for acting while sporting a vibrant red dress courtesy Armani, while Hidden FiguresTaraji P. Henson took a more demure approach in custom Alberta Ferretti.

But some of the night’s best looks extended beyond the red carpet. Oscar after-parties saw stunning fashion moments featuring everyone from actress Kate Bosworth in an etherial green J. Mendel frock to Kate Hudson in shimmering Roberto Cavalli at the iconic Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

Pregnancy style also hit major strides as model Rosie Hunt Whitely flaunted her baby bump in custom Versace at Vanity Fair, while songstress Ciara rocked her bump in a custom August Getty Atelier knit gown alongside husband and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

Unfortunately, a pregnant Natalie Portman, who was nominated for her leading role in Jackie, opted out of this year’s Oscar festivities.

Of course, everyone can’t be on the flattering side of fashion. The legendary Halle Berry stunned in Atelier Versace only for her look to be overshadowed by a weirdly stiff wig; Sofia Boutella missed the mark in a sparkling Chanel SS17 couture number (who knew it was possible to mess up Chanel); and actress Dakota Johnson was reminiscent of satin drapes in a champagne-hued Gucci Fall 2017 gown.
