Gifts For The Men In Your Life

Go Beyond the Golf Tee

BY

I don’t know about you, but I grew up in an era where most men — whether they be fathers, husbands, or a relative of some sort — were gifted one of a few items. First and foremost: after-shave or cologne. Then generally something somewhat sporty or outdoorsy like golf tees or fishing lures. (Actually, I found a nifty online resource for getting personalized golf tees, so perhaps that can stay on your list for a gentleman in your life.) Ahead, I’ve compiled a few modern gifts for men that show you took some time and made some effort this holiday season. And in a worst-case scenario, you can always run to Neiman’s to pick up a bottle of cologne.

Topping the list is an original piece of artwork. And I think the best route to take is to purchase something from a living artist, better yet, one living in Texas. Two that I’ve had my eye on for a while now — painter and mixed media artist William Atkinson and photographer Steve Wrubel. And the cost — well I always say art is priceless. But if you are interested simply visit the gallery that represents each: Erin Cluley Gallery for William Atkinson and Christopher Martin Gallery for Steve Wrubel.

It’s a cliche I know, but men like to grill. Consider ordering something from the hallowed ground for carnivores, Perini Ranch. This legendary steakhouse in Buffalo Gap, Texas has legions of fans, including some that have occupied the White House and others on movie marquees. If you can’t make the roughly three-hour drive, then simply check out their website for an array of gifts — from steak rubs (starting at $35) to drool-worthy cuts of meat ($150 and up).

An item I pick up for my boyfriend every year is a new pair of slippers. Always great to support a Dallas-based business and what better one than Hari Mari. Once thought of as only the go-to for flip flops, this stylish footwear company (with a brick-and-mortar location on Knox Steet) now makes boots, casual shoes, and slippers. I’m likely buying my guy a pair of Hari Mari’s Hacienda in chestnut ($140). They look oh-so-cozy with their shearling lining.

Have a horologist in your life? Then consider a vintage timepiece from Maxfield LA. I spied one, a 1968 Rolex Oyster Watch, that looks like it would have been at home on the wrist of Paul Newman or Steve McQueen. Priced at $9,800 it might be a real show of love.

Got a guy in your life that truly has his best friend by him most of the time — and by best friend, I mean his dog. Well, there are lots of items out there right now that will make him super happy. Purveyor’s of West Coast cool, Fred Segal, has a collaboration with Maxbone and a great gift item is their ultra-soft blanket with the words: Love, Dreams, Paws on it ($55). Also, Christian Louboutin has entered the lucrative pet accessories world and you can gift a Loubitoy rubber chew toy for $250.

Do you have a man in your life who is hightailing it to some sunny beach around New Years? Many Dallasites make their way to the shores of St. Barths or Cabo to end their year. If that’s the case, head over to Stanley Korshak and buy him a new pair by Orlebar Brown. They are the trunks of choice with the jet-setting crew.

And, lastly, for that hedge fund guy who has it all already, consider donating $10,000 to Klyde Warren Park so that a tree is named in his honor. It will be around for his children, grandchildren and the generations to come to see his name engraved on a plaque in Dallas’ beloved park.
