Bunny Williams Makes Houston the First Stop on Her New Book Tour, at Design In Bloom with Texas Design Week

From the Splendors of a Connecticut Retreat to a Harbour Island Hotel

BY // 03.22.19

Bunny Williams opened her design firm in 1988, after a 22-year apprenticeship with Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, and catapulted to design notoriety for her elegantly gracious style that’s both livable, layered and lush.

She’s married to esteemed antiques dealer John Rosselli, and is passionate about gardens and entertaining at their Connecticut home. She has made acolytes of us all with the detailing in books and magazines of the splendors of their Connecticut retreat.

The author of six books, Williams has a new design monograph, Bunny Williams: Love Affairs with Houses (Abrams, $60), featuring 15 new projects, including the historic Hickory Hill estate in Virginia once owned by Jackie and John F. Kennedy, and a contemporary duplex with a glass-and-steel circular staircase.

She’s currently working on a boutique hotel on Harbour Island and restoring a family house in Pacific Heights in San Francisco.

We zipped off an email to Bunny, to see what she’s up to before her Houston appearance on Tuesday, March 26. For ticket information see below.

Blooming at your Falls Village estate.
In the greenhouse, we have South African bulbs, camellias, and jasmine.

Color obsession.
I recently did a dining room with Granny Smith apple-green lacquered walls and watery pale turquoise silk curtains.

Recent purchase.
For my new apartment, I found a pair of Italian carved-pine figures to flank a modern painting in the living room.

Collections.
Contemporary pottery.

Modern times.
I love working in a more modern vernacular, but the base and so many of the principles of design are the same, so you are really just choosing contemporary pieces over antiques. In the end, you just want the rooms to be comfortable, welcoming, and livable.

In another life …
If I could sing, I’d be an opera singer. But since I can’t sing, I would probably run an animal rescue center.
