Celebrated Designer Jean-Louis Deniot Heads to Houston for Texas Design Week

The High-Flying, Risk-Taking French Designer Shares His Thoughts

BY // 03.22.19

Jean-Louis Deniot is one of the most sought-after interior designers in the world. The charming Parisian is known for his sophisticated interiors that layer contemporary furnishings with a strong dose of history and a dram of drama.

He has projects around the globe, including a recently completed 20-room townhouse on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and is currently at work on a 40,000-square-foot white marble palace in India, as well as residences in Hong Kong, Moscow and West Hollywood.

Deniot’s stylish reach extends beyond interiors into furniture design — his second collection of 40 pieces for Baker will launch in October at High Point Market. His book, Jean-Louis Deniot: Interiors (Rizzoli, $65), features many of his own homes around the world, including a country house in the South of France.

Jean-Louis Deniot will be in Houston Friday, March 29, as part of Texas Design Week, hosted by  New Orleans Auction Galleries, with additional sponsorship Chateau Domingue. Cocktails, talk and book signing,  6:30 pm, at The Susan and Fayez Sarofim House. For tickets and complete Texas Design Week schedule, click here.

Here, PaperCity talks all things design with Jean-Louis Deniot, before he boards his flight to Houston.

On the design horizon.
The world is going in every direction. Look at fashion: It is a blend of hot mess. Minimalism and maximalism all at the same time. But this chaos is really, really fun, as nothing is interdit anymore. You can literally mix everything, and the oddest juxtaposition seems to get the most applause.

It is a great time for experimentations. Design is definitely moving toward one-of-a-kind and exclusive pieces, such as great antiques and limited editions more than ever.

Chic is…
Chic is not about money; it’s about style. Chic interiors can be created from something quite understated, something that plays with high and low, colors, textures, styles. It is je ne sais quoi.

Another book?
Yes, I am very excited about my second opus. The theme is going to be vacation and weekend homes, starting with a private Falcon 2000 aircraft. I’ll bring readers with me all around the world to some of my favorite destination jobs. This book will be all about unplugging.

Design minds.
I admire Kelly Wearstler, because I have the impression that both of our brains are somehow connected in the far universe. She is a fabulous creator, a hard-working visionary, and a good friend.

The late Alberto Pinto is my master since day one in terms of career. He was the best interior designer of the 20th century, working in so many various countries, in such varieties of styles, and on only fabulous and unique properties. Such a hard-working genius.

Recent purchases.
I have been buying some classical French Louis XVI and French transitional-style furnishings. They correspond to the highest level of France’s glory and history, le siècle des Lumières. I mix it with modern design: Memphis from the ’80s and contemporary creations. It’s so chic. Beautiful things always mix well with everything.

It’s all theater.
Rooms should create a reaction, a feeling, and an atmosphere. I use drama mostly to emphasize a great sense of individuality and personality. Drama also illustrates grandeur and power — I do not enjoy safety. Risks are so much more rewarding.
