Celebrity Fave Nate Berkus Keeps It Surprisingly Simple for His New Collaboration: Getting Roller With It

BY // 07.31.17

Interior designer Nate BerkusOprah’s friend/designer, TV star, tsunami survivor, bestselling author — is the reining king of decorating with intriguing neutrals. After utilizing family-run custom window treatments company The Shade Store for a few design projects and for his new show Nate & Jeremiah by Design, in which he and husband/fellow designer Jeremiah Brent correct disastrous home renovations, Berkus was impressed with The Shade Store’s high level and ease of service, from field measurements to quality to installation. A collaboration was born.

Berkus opted for a simple and functional collection of roller shades.

“I like how tailored and clean roller shades feel in the room. The idea of adding pattern on the shades is an opportunity to express your personality,” he says. “I see these pieces as an additional layer to a room that feels storied and assembled over time. I like the idea of these patterns complimenting what people are already living with.”

Travel has long been the backbone of Berkus’s design DNA, and this collection, which marks Berkus’ first foray into branded custom window treatments (he has product lines for Target and Jo-Ann Fabric), is no exception.

“Every collection is inspired by the things I see on my travels, the people, the places the things made by hand. The patterns I designed for this collection are no different. I wanted them to feel hand drawn and unexpected.”

Off-whites paired with muted grays, tans, dusty rose, and indigo appear in reimagined classic patterns. Both light-filtering and blackout options are available.

“I’m currently on my third passport, because heading out to see the world and in particular the crafts and textiles you can find while traveling, has always been one of my great joys. This represents, for me, some of the best textiles I’ve found along the way, whether a placemat from Mexico, embroidery from Southeast Asia, or printed fabrics from Europe,” Nate Berkus says.

The collection is available direct to consumers and to the trade in the showroom at Houston Decorative Center, 5120 Woodway, and online at theshadestore.com. Each order is hand-crafted in the United States and ships in 10 days or less. Additionally, The Shade Store offers a network of measuring and installation professionals to their clients.
