Downtown Fever: A Showy New High-Rise With Grocery Store Visions Will Tower Over Houston’s Burgeoning Bar Scene

BY Chris Baldwin and Jailyn Marcel // 01.13.16

Downtown Houston is arguably more walkable than it’s ever been. New bar life bustles along the Congress Avenue and Main Street corridor. There are restaurants such as Batanga drawing regular crowds and Market Square Park hosts everything from movie nights to bingo on the lawn.

Hines noticed all this activity — and decided to plant a high-rise in the middle of it. The idea being: What’s better than being able to walk right out your front door and into the action?

The prominent real estate company is betting that there will be plenty of eager renters for its upcoming 32-story Aris Market Square tower. After all, it’s joining a mini downtown high-rise building craze and won’t even be the only new tower on the block.

With more than 40 new luxury high-rise and mid-rise projects under construction in Houston, keeping up with the city’s vertical boom requires much more than counting cranes. In this new PaperCity online series, we’ll look at all the top luxury high-rises and mid-rises in various stages of completion throughout the area.

We’ll compare square footage, amenities, views from the top, luxe factors, walkability and price for the definitive guide to Houston’s new high life. You’ll find out about everything from the starchitects and the kitchen specs to the pet perks. Aris Market Square will stick out with its dual design — the base of the tower will incorporate a historic brick-and-cast stone feel, while the tower itself is all gleaming modern glass and steel.

A bicycle repair shop in the tower itself will add to the vision of a much less car-dependent Houston lifestyle. There is also talk of a possible grocery store on the ground floor of the building, which could represent the largest transformation of the area yet.
