Right in between the cities of Houston, Austin, and San Antonio, a small town called Swiss Alp holds a Texas treasure – a treasure which is now at the center of an online bidding war.

The Swiss Alp Dancehall has housed Texas music legends for the last 117 years, and now it needs someone to carry on its legacy. The historic venue is up for auction on eBay, with a current bid just over $100,000.

The lucky new owners will take on the dance hall, and adjacent cafe, along with the two acre lot around it. More importantly, the winning bid will secure a piece of Texas history.

Built in 1900 to serve the local German and Czech communities, the dance hall became a gem of Swiss Alp. Over the years it hosted everyone from Bob Wills to Johnny Winter to B.J. Thomas, drawing in crowds from across the state. To this day the venue lives up to its name as a country dancing mecca, welcoming artists like Stoney Larue, Amber Digby, and Asleep at the Wheel.

As the real estate listing notes, the iconic dance hall “has seen virtually all of the changing trends and styles of Texas popular music over the last century.”

Swiss Alp has also stayed true to its German and Czech roots, with the local community passing down the tradition of polka dancing from generation to generation.

Sitting on two acres of rolling hills, the 7,000 square foot dance hall is charmingly rustic with a barn-style structure and gabled roof. Included in the property is the fully-furnished Swiss Alp Cafe next door.

The buyer should “expect a little wear and tear” — after all, it’s seen a lot of action in the last century — but hopefully the Swiss Alp Dancehall has many years of boot-scooting ahead.
