Sharks Like You’ve Never Seen Before: Jaw-Dropping New Photographs Shed a Scary Light on the Ocean’s Predators

BY Rachel Lefferts // 06.22.16

Sink your teeth into Shark Week — arriving Sunday, June 26 this year instead of the regular August time — and get to know one of the ocean’s most feared and misunderstood predators with Sharks (Taschen), a portfolio of jaw-dropping (pun intended) underwater shark photography.

Available at Nest, the book features a collection of images taken by illustrious photog Michael Muller, whose portraits of actors, sport stars and musicians have earned him worldwide repute.

Using a patented seven-bulb, 1200-watt plexi-encased strobe lighting rig developed by NASA — and, daringly, without a cage — Muller traversed the oceans from South Africa to the Bahamas to capture sharks’ diversity, might and beauty, and highlight the need for their conservation.

In addition to narratives from each of his trips, the book includes essays from Philippe Cousteau, Jr. and marine biologist Alison Kock, along with an overview of Muller’s work by culture writer Arty Nelson.
