Austin’s Best Tacos: 5 Spots That Are a Cut Above in a City That Worships the Taco Like No Other

BY // 02.22.18

Simply put, there is no competition to match Austin’s taco scene. Anyone that has lived in Austin and (sadly) left has known the hole that Austin’s taco scene leaves in your heart, that is impossible to fill.

While a ton of Austin restaurants serve up great tacos, this list is all about the best tacos in Austin, rather than the best taco joints. Read on for our picks.

Tyson’s Tacos

The Burnt Ends taco at Tyson Tacos is filled with crispy onion rings, pickled jalapeños and Valentina cream, which perfectly compliment the smoky and rich burnt ends that go into this taco. Get it on corn tortilla — because duh — and eat your heart out.

Just beware of the longtime Austin locals who will be complaining about how long Tyson’s lines have gotten and about the mythical Free Beer Friday that once was.

Tyson’s Tacos is an Austin legend for good reason.

Veracruz All Natural

Veracruz’s tortillas and chips are homemade everyday, which lends itself to a great taco made by owners/sisters Reyna and Maritza. You can’t make a bad choice at Veracruz, but we always go for Veracruz’s Al Pastor, made with pork marinated in pineapple juice and chile guajillo for a spicy and sweet combo, accompanied by cilantro, onions, queso fresco, and avocado. It’s salty, sweet, herby, cheesy, and downright delicious.

Finish it all of with Veracruz’s delicious watermelon agua fresca.

Taco Joint

Taco Joint is known for the most fulfilling and cheapest tacos in Austin. Taco Joint’s fried fish taco is heavenly, with tender and flaky fish, and honey lime cabbage slaw, finished off with cilantro and cogito cheese. This should be your go-to taco for meat-free Mondays or whenever you get a fish taco hankering.

Choose from flour, corn, or wheat tortillas in one of Taco Joint’s two locations.

Juan in a Million

Open since 1980, Juan in a Million is still a family business, with son Juan Jr., son of original owners Juan and Myrna Meza, managing day-to-day business and daughter Christina running media operations. Even more importantly, The Don Juan Taco is popular amongst college students looking for a filling meal at a decent price, and Austin locals alike, with rumors that The Don Juan can feed a family of four, or one very hungry college student.

The Don Juan El Taco Grande is a “secret combination” of potato, egg, bacon and cheese in a crispy on the outside, soft on the inside hot tortilla. Wash it down with Juan in a Million’s comforting Horchata.

Juan in a Million is worth the wait. Taco trust us.

Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ

If there was ever a perfect food, it would be tacos filled with Central Texas’ world famous barbecue. Luckily, Valentina’s thought ahead, with its perfect smoked brisket taco, made with simple sea salt, lime, guacamole and tomato serrano salsa. Valentina’s keeps it simple to focus on their local brisket that melts in your mouth.
