Dallas’ 13 Best Bakeries

Our Favorite Local Spots for Breads, Pastries, Cookies, Cakes, and More Sweet Treats

BY Megan Ziots // 03.30.26

Bakeries are wonderful places. Many nowadays serve the dual purpose of offering daily sustenance (breads) and over-the-top indulgences (sweet treats). In Dallas, we like to always be on the go, but with several new spots opening, there come more opportunities to sit down and stay awhile with a coffee and croissant. Or, even a sandwich and a matcha latte at lunchtime.

Over the last month or so, we’ve visited some brand-new bakeries, as well as returned to some old staples, to craft our most recent list of the best bakeries in Dallas.

Kuluntu Bakery

900 E. Clarendon Drive (Opening Soon)

This local, non-profit bakery was founded in Cape Town, South Africa, by Stephanie and Warren Leichtle-Chalklen before relocating to Dallas in 2018. Kuluntu has been offering its breads (the focaccia is delicious), cookies, croissants, cinnamon rolls, cakes, and more from their home in Oak Cliff since. This spring, they’ll be opening their first brick-and-mortar at East Dock.

La Rue Doughnuts

3011 Gulden Lane

Our favorite doughnut shop in Dallas is the only doughnut-focused bakery on this list because it’s just that good. La Rue also offers more than doughnuts, including cookies, croissants, kolaches, and pinwheels. Creations rotate monthly, but there are a few popular picks that remain on the menu, like the popular gluten-free honey corn cake doughnut.

The Bread Club

2681 Howell Street, BU5

The most recent addition to Dallas’ bakery scene, The Bread Club, comes from the owners of Michelin-starred Mamani. It’s located right next door to the modern European restaurant at Uptown’s The Quad. Led by baking director Peter Edris (formerly of Frenchette Bakery in New York City), the new bakery mills Texas-grown grains in-house to produce handcrafted breads, laminated pastries, made-to-order sandwiches, grab-and-go salads, sweets, signature matcha drinks, and coffee. Make sure to try the seasonal danish.

Sugar & Sage

4314 Lovers Lane

Founded by a mother and daughter (Alison and Ashley Weinstein) in the Park Cities in 2023, this bakery became a new favorite in Dallas right away. Executive Pastry Chef Jill Bates (Café Momentum, Fearing’s) leads the pastry program. She collaborated with Michael Laiskonis, James Beard Award-winning chef and former head of the pastry program at the three-Michelin-starred Le Bernardin in New York, to develop the bakery’s menu and refine recipes, including pain au chocolat, everything bagel brioche, and kouign-amann.

Andy Pham opened this bakery in 2022 at Preston Valley Shopping Center. And this spring, he’s expanding his concept to a second Dallas location at Mockingbird Station (in the former Milk and Honey space), following the original outpost’s success. The French pastry spot is known for its Suprême Croissant, which was inspired by an NYC bakery and is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, macarons, and desserts that like look like real fruits.

Empire Baking Company

Multiple Locations

Family-run and located at Inwood Village, Empire Baking Company has been known for its breads since 1992. Meaders and Robert Ozarow started the company after realizing their passion for food while working in furniture sales and investment banking. At the time, there were few places to purchase fresh bread, so the couple decided to bring their own to Dallas. Empire’s retail stores (they now have three across Dallas) sell everything from European-style breads and pastries to gourmet sandwiches and a selection of small-batch jams.

Village Baking Co.

Founded in 2004 by husband-and-wife Clint and Kim Cooper, Village Baking Co. now has outposts in Knox-Henderson, Bishop Arts, Oak Lawn, Lower Greenville, and Preston Center. It’s a one-stop shop for bread, croissants, and rolls. Must-try bites include the almond croissant, pain au chocolat, and jambon et fromage sandwich. At all of the locations, you can grab a cup of coffee and a pastry and sit at a high-top bar or a patio table outside. Or take away a baguette for later.
