Dallas Restaurant Scene Hit by Significant Closures at the End of 2017: Several Notable Spots Shutdown for Good

BY // 01.03.18

You’ve heard about the hottest restaurants to open in Dallas in the last 12 months — but 2017 also saw the end of many local eateries. Renowned restaurants like Wayward Sons and Filament shuttered, as did Denton’s only gay bar, Mable Peabody’s. As PaperCity previously reported, long-standing McKinney Ave watering hole Idle Rich Pub is also preparing to close its doors later this month.

Here are a few other Dallas restaurants that bowed out at the end of the year…

Victor Tangos

Beloved Henderson Avenue restaurant and bar Victor Tangos closed with a bang on New Year’s Eve. Victor Tangos, best known for its killer cocktails and tapas, brought the craft cocktail movement to Dallas a decade ago. Developer Tristan Simon opened the restaurant in 2008, before the neighborhood became the nightlife hotspot it now is.

Simon sold Victor Tangos to Tim Headington in 2014. The eatery was popular for late-night eats and inventive drinks. Employees of Victor Tangos have been offered the option to transfer to other Headington Co.’s restaurants, including Sassetta, Wheelhouse and Commissary.

Fat Chicken

Fat Chicken in Trinity Groves also served its last meal on New Year’s Eve. The restaurant incubator revealed that Fat Chicken will vacate the space and be replaced by another new concept in 2018. Chef DJ Quintanilla and his co-owner Linda Mazzei opened the restaurant a year ago. It offered a wide variety of chicken-based dishes, from southern fried chicken to pot pies.

Fat Chicken was the second concept from the co-owners, who previously operated Resto Gastro Bistro in the same space. It’s not yet clear what restaurant will replace Fat Chicken in the incubator.

Haymaker

Lower Greenville sports bar Haymaker shut its doors in mid-December after only 14 months in Dallas. Haymaker was a popular spot for watching sports or playing games in the beer garden. The bar made the announcement on Facebook, but did not give reason for the closure, simply stating “we have given it our all.” The original location in Austin is still up and running.
