Steakhouse Power is Closing Another Houston Restaurant: Its Casual Spinoff in West Ave Bows Out With 50 Percent Off Drinks Sale

BY // 09.10.18

West Ave’s casual chophouse is on the chopping block. Del Frisco’s Grille in Upper Kirby is shuttering this Sunday, September 16. Del Frisco’s Grille is closing after five years in the upscale mixed-use development.

Del Frisco’s Grille offered up unexpected comfort food appetizers like cheesesteak egg rolls and artichoke beignets. It was best known for its signature steaks and hamburgers.

It’s not the only ambitious West Ave restaurant to suffer such a fate. Cuisines from Korean to Italian have all struggled to find super longtime success. Robert Del Grande’s Ava Kitchen & Whiskey Bar and Pizzeria Alto, along with food TV star Susie Jimenez’s Trenza and Donald Chang’s Nara have all closed in the development.

But the right restaurant has shown it can more than thrive in West Ave. Pondicheri  is still going strong in its space. Its chef Anita Jaisinghani even emerged as a semifinalist for a James Beard Award last year.

But Del Frisco’s is saying its goodbyes.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has dined with us since we opened in Houston. It’s never easy to say goodbye, but we will be permanently closed after September 16th 2018,” a Facebook post from the restaurant reads. The restaurant is also offering 50 percent off beer, wine and liquor until its closes for good.

Two other Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group restaurants in Houston are going on with business as usual. Del Frisco’s Grille in The Woodlands, which followed the West Ave original, will stay open.

Upscale alternative Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse is also keeping on. But the Dallas-based restaurant group’s Sullivan’s Steakhouse in The Galleria closed just last May. The CFO of Del Frisco’s Restaurant Group said in a conference call that neither Del Frisco’s Grille nor Sullivan’s saw a spike in business during the Houston Super Bowl.

There is no indication yet of what will replace Del Frisco’s — and move into the prime West Ave space.
