Houston’s Iconic Fried Chicken Haven is Shuttering Its Original Restaurant, But the Greasy Greatness Will Go On

Beyonce's Favorite Restaurant Isn't Leaving the Stage

Even the biggest fried chicken fans should pardon their Frenchy’s for shutting down the iconic spot’s original Houston location. The Louisiana Creole restaurant first opened at 3919 Scott back in 1969, but it’s saying so long to the space after this week.

Frenchy’s will close its original location for good on Friday when a temporary location for one of the city’s most significant restaurants opens across the street at 4646 Scott. A new permanent flagship replacement is expected to break ground at Scott and Alabama soon.

New Orleans native Percy “Frenchy” Creuzot Jr.’s legendary legacy will go on.

The Third Ward fried chicken, gumbo and red beans and rice haven was originally supposed to close Tuesday night. But diehard fans have been given these few extra days to pay their respects — and they are. Even high-profile deep-fried devotees such as Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Turner posted a photo of himself munching on a delicious chicken box at his desk on Instagram.

“For lunch today, I had some great local fried chicken, red beans and rice from the original @frenchyschicken off Scott St. in #ThirdWard. Today is the last day to get some legs, thighs, wings and all the fixings from the original location which will move to a temporary location in 2019,” he captioned the picture. Quite the stamp of approval.

And he’s not the only Houstonian to bow down to Frenchy’s greatness. Queen Bey herself gave a nod to the fried chicken spot in her 2013 hit “Bow Down/I Been On.” The song kicks off “I’m out that H-Town, coming, coming down,” before giving kudos to the Houston icon’s mouthwatering eats. “Frenchy’s, Boudin in the parking lot.”

The original Frenchy’s — where fans are flocking in drooling droves — will be torn down to make way for nearby Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church’s expansion. The church is set to grow its complex and sanctuary to enhance its education and recreational ministries. The building was sold back in 2016.

The teardown is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 7.

If you just can’t wait for the greasy goodness of Frenchy’s, you can also head on over to one of its other six Houston area locations. Of course, there is always only one first.
