Who Makes Houston’s Best Burger? Vote Now to Decide the Burger Champ (and Get $250 in Free Food)

Sometimes, There are No Wrong Answers — Only Tasty Ones

BY // 05.20.19

You could say there’s been a lot of burger buzz in Houston lately. The Bayou City is a true patty paradise — whether you like them on the thinner side, crisp, made of good ol’ fashioned beef, brisket, a mix of both, or even veggies.

But who has the best Houston burger of all?

You get to decide by voting for your rightful champ in PaperCity‘s Best Burger Challenge. The winning restaurant takes home serious bragging rights, but you get a chance to win big too.

One voter will be randomly selected to win a $250 gift card from whichever spot emerges as the Houston burger champion. That’s some serious burger buying power. You can vote once per day — and the more times you vote, the more chances you have to win.

Here are the contenders:

The Burger Joint

Thick, plump burgers is the name of the game at The Burger Joint. Try the Smoke Stack — a hard-to-reckon-with burger piled high with pulled pork, mac ‘n cheese, a fried egg, slaw, and mayo.

Lankford Grocery & Market

You know when you see it that you’re going to get a great burger inside Lankford Grocery. Take note that you can order Lankford’s Old Fashion Hamburger – set with mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion – as a triple threat. That’s triple meat.

Stanton’s City Bites

Stanton’s City Bites has kept up with hungry Houstonians for decades, and their Luke Skyburger is a testament to their burger mastery. It comes with provolone cheese, deep fried bacon, fresh garlic-sautéed spinach and grilled mushrooms. What’s not to love?

Hubcap Grill

The fresh-grilled burger is something to be reckoned with here at Hubcap Grill. We suggest getting a little edgy and ordering the Sticky Monkey Burger. This undeniably Elvis-themed beef patty is topped with crunchy peanut butter, American cheese and grilled bananas.

Bernie’s Burger Bus

Bernie’s started as a food truck in an actual yellow school bus and quickly built a cult following. Justin Turner’s graduated to three brick and mortar restaurants, but his distinctive burgers are no less juicy or homemade. With burgers dubbed Homeroom, The Class Clown, The Substitute and more, there is something fun (and giant) for everyone.

Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack

This burger shack tucked under 59 is a sneaky powerhouse…or shack. While all of their burgers are worth getting, we recommend their Border Burger, topped with Monterey Jack cheese and spicy picante sauce for that Texas kick.

The Hay Merchant

The burgers at The Hay Merchant are juicy, savory, and incredibly indulgent. Their Cease and Desist Burger is a mighty fine tribute to the burger, with two 44 Farms patties, two slices of cheese, lettuce, tomato and a house-made pickle.

Whataburger

Some may consider it sacrilegious to include a mass-market fast food chain on a best burger list, but this is Texas and Whataburger breaks all the rules on what’s acceptable. Sometimes (usually late at night), you may just think Whataburger is the best in the land. We’re not going to judge you for that. This isn’t just another fast food burger.

Moon Tower Inn

Though this super under-the-radar shack has a variety of tasty meaty bites, don’t overlook their $9.69 half-pound burgers. For those who like a little extra spice in life, order the Grim Creeper, with 13 chiles of death and red devil sweat mayo.

Flip ‘n Patties

This food truck-turned-brick-and-mortar Filipino-American mashup is pure magic. For something exploding with flavor, try the Puet, made with Akaushi beef, pecan-smoked pork butt, sautéed onions, provolone, house blend mayo and FNP tang sauce.

This poll has now ended – the winner of PaperCity‘s Best Burger Challenge is Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack.

Congratulations to Leah Sheesley for scoring a $250 gift card to the winning restaurant.
