A Love Letter to Irving, Texas — Dallas’ Most Overlooked Suburb Suddenly Deserves a Second Look: New Concert Mecca, Trendy Restaurants Make a Boring Area Hot

BY // 02.27.18

Let’s face it – the suburbs are a little boring. As a lifelong resident of Irving, Texas, I can say with confidence that it’s a largely unremarkable place. It’s also, like, really convenient.

Positioned between Dallas and Fort Worth, Irving is a short jaunt to DFW airport, and (without traffic) a 15-minute drive to Downtown Dallas. Until recently, you probably didn’t have any reason to trek out to Irving (unless you wanted to admire the empty lot that was once Texas Stadium (the Dallas Cowboys’ old home), or the seriously bizarre Venetian canals in Las Colinas).

But, there are some cool things cooking up in my hometown as of late, and I think you should take the trip! The Toyota Music Factory is giving Irving a little cultural boost, and new restaurants are following.

Here are three new reasons to visit Dallas’ most overlooked suburb…

Top Round

Beef. It’s what’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner at this new chef-driven restaurant. Think of Top Round as a high end fast food joint.

The Los Angeles-based meat mecca specializes in slow-roasted beef, made in-house and used in tasty sandwiches, like the Beef & Cheese with homemade cheese “wizz,” or the Horse & Hole with horseradish cream and roasted mushrooms. The menu also includes pickle brined chicken sandwiches, hand-cut fries cooked in 100 percent beef fat, and ice cream custard.

Top Round is now open at the Toyota Music Factory for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

El Famoso

Get a taste of Southern California Mexican cuisine and old school diner vibes at El Famoso, now open at Las Colinas’ Gables’ Water Street development. Creator and owner Charlie Green, who previously brought Olivella’s to North Texas, was inspired by mid-century diners in Los Angeles.

The restaurant serves street tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and American diner staples like burgers, fries and sloppy Joes. There are also craft cocktails, beer, wine and tequila. El Famoso is situated on Lake Carolyn, a short distance from the aforementioned Music Factory, and has a spacious patio.

Lime Bar

Lime Bar wants to get the party started in Las Colinas. The restaurant, bar and lounge offers Pan Asian food, Asian tapas, cocktails and fun music in a setting meant for socializing. The menu spans everything from pho to pad Thai to orange chicken, plus a list of shareable tapas like spicy mango hot wings, Viet tacos and braised pork belly buns.

It currently has limited hours, which should expand after the Grand Opening this Friday – find more info here.
