Dallas’ Hippie Pizza Spot Suddenly Shutters: Far-Out Pies Apparently Couldn’t Compete in a Bar Slice Hotbed

There’s now one less pizza to be had on Henderson Ave after Mellow Mushroom abruptly closed its only Dallas location on Sunday. The Atlanta-based restaurant chain has several locations in suburbs across the metroplex, but the Henderson location was the only one within city limits.

Known for its eclectic style and hippie themed decor, Mellow Mushroom opened its Dallas location a short five months ago.

The chain started in Atlanta in 1973 and now has more than 150 locations across the country. The restaurant specializes in “Classic Southern Pizza,” with far out names like “Kosmic Karma” and “Thai Dye.” The pizza is offered in a variety of flavors and toppings, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

Mellow Mushroom moved into the former home of Hacienda on Henderson last year. The location is right in the middle of a hopping bar scene, which should have made it prime pizza territory. However, with local favorite Fireside Pies, Greenville Avenue Pizza Company, Pie Tap, and ZaLat all within a mile radius, Mellow Mushroom faced some seriously tough competition.

The owners of the Dallas branch reportedly own Mellow Mushroom restaurants in McKinney and Flower Mound as well. While the Henderson location was a bust, the pizza chain has a solid foothold in Dallas’ surrounding suburbs.

The reason for the Henderson Mellow Mushroom’s sudden closure is unclear. Managers made the surprising announcement at a restaurant staff meeting on Sunday morning.

While the closure is certainly sudden, it isn’t all that shocking. As mentioned, the neighborhood is flush with popular pizza joints – notably Fireside Pies, which has its original location half a mile from Mellow Mushroom’s ill-fated outpost.

Now if you want your pizza served with a side of groovy 1970s charm, you’ll have to head to one of the nine Mellow Mushroom locations outside of Dallas proper (the closest one is in Arlington).
