Montrose’s Best New Restaurants — 9 Hotspots Transforming Houston’s Most Eclectic Neighborhood

From Dessert Havens to a Mystery Tex-Mex Spot

BY // 01.20.19

New year, new restaurants. Houston’s restaurant scene is only getting bigger, with nine new restaurants springing up in Montrose alone. The eclectic neighborhood will see new restaurants pop up everywhere from Westheimer to Richmond.

There’s a lot to be said of variety, the spice of life, and it’s definitely plentiful in these newcomers. You can expect second locations of popular cafes, the emergency of buzz-worthy concepts from notable restaurant groups, and even a few mysterious debuts whose details are still on the down low.

PaperCity has rounded up the new Montrose restaurants that will be sweeping in over the next year.

The Toasted Coconut

This spring, a tropical breeze is set to roll through Montrose. Nobie’s chef Martin Stayer will be showing off his take on the tiki theme. The Toasted Coconut, a tiki restaurant and bar, will set up shop at 1617 Richmond Avenue.

Get ready to sip on hurricanes on a sunny 1,500-square-foot patio.

Teaming up with Nobie’s master mixologist Sarah Troxell, Stayer’s new spot is all about the island life, with nods to Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. The menu is sure to feature tiki mainstays, but the rest is under wraps. You can head on over to Nobie’s “Toasty Tuesday” pop-up on February 12th for a sneak peek.

Magical Dessert Bar

Calling all avid Instagrammers — Dallas’ famed unicorn-themed confectionary, Magical Dessert Bar, hits Houston in February. The social media-obsessed are sure to flock to this sweetest of spots next to Chills360 on Westheimer.

It’s whimsical beyond imagination — hot pink hot chocolate, cake pops, rainbow-colored milkshakes, the world’s fluffiest macarons and unicorns everywhere.

Mystery Tex-Mex spot

Sambrooks, the restaurant group behind Sam’s Chicken & Donuts, The Pit Room and more has stepped in to take over the shuttered Cane Rosso space in Montrose. The plans for a Tex-Mex restaurant were revealed just recently.

The cuisine’s been nailed down, but the other details remain a mystery for now. Stay tuned.

Kiwi Creamery

The deets on this upcoming ice cream shop, headed to 1332B Westheimer, are very much under wraps. The images on their new website make it look like a gelato-style setup that’s creamier than all get-out.

Postino

The Heights’ wildly popular Postino wine cafe is making the jump to Montrose, where it’s opening its second Houston outpost. Postino is known for making a splash — and not just for its insane bruschetta flights — think smoked salmon with pesto, Brie and apples with fig spread, etc.

Postino’s making big moves, taking over the former Montrose Mining Company space at 805 Pacific Street. That long-running bar was beloved by the LGBTQ community.

Let’s just say Postino has big shoes to fill. The vino probably won’t hurt.

Sweetgreen

Clean eaters, rejoice. Health-centric Sweetgreen is following up its Rice Village success with a new restaurant at 1303 Westheimer. The main tenets: scratch cooking, sustainability and local sourcing.

That looks like robust spicy Thai and hummus tahini salads, signature bowls such as chicken pesto parm and shroomami, and make your own bowls brimming with protein options, nutritious greens and fresh produce.

Montrose Cheese & Wine

These next three were revealed back in the summer, but they’re still crazy-anticipated.

The carefully curated Montrose Cheese &  Wine comes from Goodnight Hospitality. It will be a bite-sized spot for all wine and cheese needs, along with sophisticated kitchen gifts. Think 12 to 15 seasoanlly rotating cheeses courtesy of Houston Dairymaids and 75 differnet wines.

Rosie Cannonball

The plan for Rosie Cannonball is a mixture of a lively vibe and your classic, casual Southern European restaurant. It’s all centered on a wood-burning grill and oven, and dedicated pizza and bread programs.

But the standout just might be the professional basement wine cellars, the kind you never hear of in Houston. They’ll house vintages from Loire Valley to Beaujolais, alongside some New World producers.

March

A Mediterranean-inspired tasting menu drives this intimate, 28-seat restaurant.

The chef, with a resume that includes a stint at New York’s renowned Blue Hill, will seek to wow diners over the course of 90 minutes to two hours with innovative wine and food pairings.
