Popular Guatemalan Bakery Picks Dallas for its First U.S. Location

It's a Sweet Treat and Major Coffee Win for the City's Food Scene

A popular Guatemalan restaurant, San Martin Artisan Bakery & Restaurant, has opened its first location outside of Central America in Dallas. The bakery is located in Uptown at 3120 McKinney Avenue, which is the former McKinney Avenue Contemporary gallery space.

The new San Martin location includes a bakery, pastry shop and restaurant. The space is huge (8,700 square feet) and offers plenty of seating, workspace and baked treats. There’s also a coffee bar, which serves San Martion’s own Guatemalan coffee.

Ceilings are high, making the space feel very open. Next to the bakery, there’s also a retail shop with adorable souvenir owl mugs for sale amongst many other items.

Established in 1974 by Andres Castillo, the business has now expanded to 41 other locations in Guatemala, nine in El Salvador, and now one in the United States. Castillo’s son, Gabriel, is heading up U.S. operations. When his brother attended SMU, the two fell in love with Dallas and thought the dining scene presented exciting opportunities.

On my visit to San Martin, I had the opportunity to try a few things on the vast menu. The Balsamic pizza with bacon was my favorite. It had thin crust with stringy cheese that pulls away from the pizza as you take a bite. Very Instagram-worthy, as everyone around me was taking photos of the action.

I also tried some pigs in a blanket that were delightful and a Sante Fe salad that was decent.

There are tons of options on the brunch, lunch and dinner menus. From classic Guatemalan breakfasts to pancakes to salads and sandwiches, they really have it all. Various options of pastas, pizzas, burgers and soups also fill the menu. The drink menu is also crazy extensive with wine, beer, sangria, horchata, smoothies, juice and of course, coffee.

Now for dessert, which is what this place is really known for. The bakery has so many things to choose from, it’s kind of overwhelming. Tarts, cinnamon rolls, cookies, strudel, pies, cakes, and so much more line the bakery shelves. I tried the dulce de leche eclair and it was amazing.
