Campy New Restaurant Brings Retro Charm to Dallas’ Reborn Downtown Hotel Treasure: Fried Chicken, Foosball and Funky Cocktails Now Await at The Statler

BY // 02.23.18

Restaurant group Epic F&B’s fourth food and drink venue at The Statler hotel officially opened this week, bringing a taste of the great outdoors to Downtown Dallas… kind of. Scout is a restaurant, bar and lounge inspired by camping and national parks, but the vibes are more Moonrise Kingdom than Into the Wild – that is to say, more campy than camping.

Scout embraces the hotel’s retro charm with ‘60s and ‘70s inspired decor, a menu of classic American eats, and nostalgic games like foosball and bowling.

The 12,000-square-foot space has a large, central bar and is broken into several casual gathering areas. The dining room has comfy couches scattered throughout, and the rear of the restaurant features a stage, gaming area and satellite bar. The interior is decked out with plaid wallpaper and retro furnishings.

The Statler’s culinary director, Chef Graham Dodds is in charge of the kitchen at the new restaurant. In addition to soups, salads and entrées, the menu includes a number of shareable dishes, like the Smoked Ham & Sunchoke Dip served with pretzel bites. There are also a few “interactive” dishes that are portioned for the whole table, including the Fried Chicken Bucket, Baja Fish Taco Kit, and Mother of All Fajitas. On the sweet side, Scout offers desserts like Cherry Cobbler and “Campfire” Churros with marshmallow.

Epic F&B’s beverage director, Kyle Hilla created the bar program at Scout with socialization in mind. There are three shareable cocktail pitchers and craft beer growlers on offer, along with a selection of 20 draft beers, wine, and additional cocktails. The nine cocktails served at the bar are modern takes on classics, like the Pack Leader (a margarita with a hibiscus ice cube) and the French 76 (with créme de violette and lavender bitters).

We’re still not too sure what all this has to do with the great outdoors, but Scout is certainly somewhere we could see ourselves camping out.
